Vulnerability from csaf_redhat - Published: 2026-07-09 14:48 - Updated: 2026-09-15 06:13A local privilege escalation vulnerability has been discovered in containerd. This vulnerability is the result of an overly broad default permission which allows local users on the host to potentially access the metadata store, the content store and the contents of Kubernetes local volumes. The contents of volumes might include setuid binaries, which could allow a local user on the host to elevate privileges on the host.

A flaw was found in containerd package. Containers launched with a User set as a UID:GID larger than the maximum 32-bit signed integer can cause an overflow condition where the container ultimately runs as root (UID 0). This issue could cause unexpected behavior for environments that require containers to run as a non-root user.
A vulnerability was found in runc. A malicious attacker may create empty files or directories in arbitrary locations in the host filesystem by sharing a volume between two containers and exploiting a race with os.MkdirAll. While this can be used to create empty files, existing files will not be truncated.
CWE-22 - Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory ('Path Traversal')A container privilege escalation flaw was found in certain Multi-Cloud Object Gateway Core images. This issue stems from the /etc/passwd file being created with group-writable permissions during build time. In certain conditions, an attacker who can execute commands within an affected container, even as a non-root user, can leverage their membership in the root group to modify the /etc/passwd file. This flaw allows an attacker to set arbitrary values to git-upload-pack flags, leading to command or code execution, exposure of sensitive data, or other unintended behavior. This is only possible in configurations where the file transport protocol is being used.
A denial of service (DoS) vulnerability was found in go-git. This vulnerability allows an attacker to perform denial of service attacks by providing specially crafted responses from a Git server, which triggers resource exhaustion in go-git clients.

A flaw was found in runc. This attack is a more sophisticated variant of CVE-2019-16884, which was a flaw that allowed an attacker to trick runc into writing the LSM process labels for a container process into a dummy tmpfs file and thus not apply the correct LSM labels to the container process. The mitigation applied for CVE-2019-16884 was fairly limited and effectively only caused runc to verify that when we write LSM labels that those labels are actual procfs files.
A firewall state management issue was found in the Moby project. When firewalld reloads, Docker fails to recreate iptables rules that isolate bridge networks, allowing any container to access all ports on any other container across different bridge networks on the same host. This issue breaks network segmentation between containers that should be isolated, creating significant risk in multi-tenant environments. Only containers in --internal networks remain protected.
CWE-909 - Missing Initialization of ResourceA memory leak flaw has been discovered in the golang github.com/ulikunitz/xz package. In affected versions, it is possible to put data in front of an LZMA-encoded byte stream without detecting the situation while reading the header. This can lead to increased memory consumption because the current implementation allocates the full decoding buffer directly after reading the header. The LZMA header doesn't include a magic number or has a checksum to detect such an issue according to the specification. Note that the code recognizes the issue later while reading the stream, but at this time the memory allocation has already been done.

While the flaw only permits GET requests, preventing state changes or data exfiltration, it still poses a risk for internal network reconnaissance.
Rekor’s cose v0.0.1 entry implementation can panic on attacker-controlled input when canonicalizing a proposed entry with an empty spec.message. validate() returns nil (success) when message is empty, leaving sign1Msg uninitialized, and Canonicalize() later dereferences v.sign1Msg.Payload. A malformed proposed entry of the cose/v0.0.1 type can cause a panic on a thread within the Rekor process. The thread is recovered so the client receives a 500 error message and service still continues, so the availability impact of this is minimal.
A Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF) flaw has been discovered in the Rekor transparency log tool. In versions 1.4.3 and below, attackers can trigger SSRF to arbitrary internal services because /api/v1/index/retrieve supports retrieving a public key via user-provided URL. A flaw was found in Distribution, a toolkit for managing container content. When operating in pull-through cache mode, Distribution incorrectly processes authentication challenges from an upstream registry. An attacker controlling the upstream registry, or positioned as a Man-in-the-Middle (MitM), can exploit this by providing a malicious authentication realm URL. This vulnerability can cause Distribution to send sensitive upstream credentials, via basic authentication, to an attacker-controlled server, leading to information disclosure.
CWE-918 - Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF)A flaw was found in BuildKit, a toolkit for converting source code to build artifacts. An untrusted BuildKit frontend can be leveraged to craft a malicious API message, allowing files to be written outside of the designated BuildKit state directory. This vulnerability, which is a form of arbitrary file write, could enable an attacker to execute unauthorized code or escalate their privileges on the system. This issue arises when custom BuildKit frontends are used with specific configuration options.
