Common Weakness Enumeration

CWE-668

Weakness Discouraged

Exposure of Resource to Wrong Sphere

Abstraction: Class · Status: Draft

The product exposes a resource to the wrong control sphere, providing unintended actors with inappropriate access to the resource.

Resources such as files and directories may be inadvertently exposed through mechanisms such as insecure permissions, or when a program accidentally operates on the wrong object. For example, a program may intend that private files can only be provided to a specific user. This effectively defines a control sphere that is intended to prevent attackers from accessing these private files. If the file permissions are insecure, then parties other than the user will be able to access those files.

A separate control sphere might effectively require that the user can only access the private files, but not any other files on the system. If the program does not ensure that the user is only requesting private files, then the user might be able to access other files on the system.

In either case, the end result is that a resource has been exposed to the wrong party.

Mapping guidance

CWE-668 is high-level and is often misused as a catch-all when lower-level children might be applicable. It is sometimes used for low-information vulnerability reports [REF-1287]. It is a level-1 Class (i.e., a child of a Pillar). It is not useful for trend analysis.

Frequent misuse appears to be related to access control issues (poor authorization (CWE-285) or authentication (CWE-287)); insertion of sensitive information (CWE-201) or improper removal of sensitive information (CWE-212); insecure permissions (CWE-732 and descendants); or others. Closely analyze the specific mistake that is allowing the resource to be exposed, and perform a CWE mapping for that mistake. It is highly likely that CWE-668's children or descendants could apply.

Operation
Notes

Theoretical

A "control sphere" is a set of resources and behaviors that are accessible to a single actor, or a group of actors. A product's security model will typically define multiple spheres, possibly implicitly. For example, a server might define one sphere for "administrators" who can create new user accounts with subdirectories under /home/server/, and a second sphere might cover the set of users who can create or delete files within their own subdirectories. A third sphere might be "users who are authenticated to the operating system on which the product is installed." Each sphere has different sets of actors and allowable behaviors.

Title
Beta9 host filesystem exposure via volume path traversal
Summary
A Beta9 tenant can attach a volume when deploying a function, endpoint, or task queue. The gateway builds the host path by joining the shared volumes root, the workspace name, and the volume identifier from the stub configuration. Nothing checks that the identifier names a volume that workspace owns. Parent-directory segments in the identifier collapse the joined path to the worker's filesystem root, and the worker bind-mounts that path into the sandbox read-write unless the volume was explicitly marked read-only. A tenant with a workspace token can therefore read and write the worker's files, including other tenants' volumes stored on that machine. Confirmed against gateway 0.1.769 and worker 0.1.745. Fixed in gateway 0.1.776 and worker 0.1.756: volume identifiers and mount paths are validated before a mount is built, including for stubs saved before the check existed, and the gateway rejects a volume that does not exist or is not owned by the workspace.

Title
Cross-Application Artifact Namespace Isolation in Google Agent Development Kit (ADK) for Python
Summary
Exposure of Resource to Wrong Sphere (CWE-668) in FileArtifactService in Google Agent Development Kit (ADK) for Python (google-adk) versions 1.19.0 before 1.39.1 and 2.0.0a1 before 2.7.0 allows a caller in one application to list, read, overwrite, or delete artifacts belonging to another application when both applications share a FileArtifactService root directory and use the same user_id (and session_id for session-scoped artifacts). FileArtifactService accepted app_name across its public API methods but omitted app_name when constructing on-disk paths (root/users/{user_id}/... instead of root/apps/{app_name}/users/{user_id}/...). Version 2.6.0 scoped writes by app_name but retained a legacy root/users/{user_id} fallback for reads and deletes; version 2.7.0 and the 1.x backport in version 1.39.1 removed the fallback and enforce full per-app path scoping.

CVE-2026-112936 (GCVE-0-2026-112936)

Vulnerability from cvelistv5 – Published: 2026-10-20 14:34 – Updated: 2026-10-20 16:47
VLAI
Title
filelock: ReadWriteLock follows a symlink at the lock path into SQLite
Summary
filelock is a platform-independent file lock for Python. From 3.20.4 until 4.0.9, ReadWriteLock and AsyncReadWriteLock versions from 3.20.4 resolve the lock path and pass it to SQLite without rejecting a final symbolic link, allowing another local user who can create names in the lock directory to redirect database creation and locking or split mutual exclusion between targets. This issue is fixed in version 4.0.9.

Title
vLLM: Scale-out disaggregated multimodal transport trusts caller-supplied features
Summary
vLLM is an inference and serving engine for large language models. Prior to 0.30.0, the /inference/v1/generate endpoint in the disaggregated scale-out path accepts caller-supplied tensors in the features.kwargs_data field, cache identifiers in the features.mm_hashes field, ranges in the features.mm_placeholders field, and wire-selected multimodal field processors without rebinding them to the active model renderer contract. Forged grid geometry, field types, or non-positive placeholder lengths can terminate the shared EngineCore; when an attacker knows or can induce a victim's content hash, forged cache hashes can poison or retrieve cross-request encoder-cache state; and dropped sparse placeholder masks can alter replayed transport semantics. This issue is fixed in version 0.30.0.

Title
Docling: KServe v2 OCR engine does not enforce enable_remote_services
Summary
Docling simplifies document processing by parsing diverse formats and providing integrations with the generative AI ecosystem. From 2.83.0 until 2.131.0, the KServeV2OcrModel class defined in docling/models/stages/ocr/kserve_v2_ocr_model.py sends page images to its configured endpoint without checking the pipeline_options.enable_remote_services setting, even when the caller sets that policy control to false. The StandardPdfPipeline._make_ocr_model method also fails to pass the flag into the OCR factory, allowing remote OCR processing in configurations that rely on remote services being disabled. The destination is configured by the caller rather than selected by an attacker. This issue is fixed in 2.131.0.

Title
NetBox 2.9.5 < 4.7.0 Session Hijacking via Custom Links
Summary
NetBox versions 2.9.5 before 4.7.0 contain a server-side template injection vulnerability that allows a low-privileged user with the "Can add custom links" permission to steal session cookies and API tokens of other users by exposing the raw Django HttpRequest object to the Jinja2 template context. Attackers can craft a custom link template embedding request.COOKIES['sessionid'] or a user's API token into an img src URL, which bypasses the clean_html sanitizer and auto-exfiltrates the victim's credentials to an attacker-controlled host when a privileged user views the object, enabling full account takeover.

Title
Sandboxie-Plus: Sandbox containment bypass
Summary
Sandboxie-Plus is an open source sandbox-based isolation software for Windows. Prior to 1.18.6, a process inside a sandbox could send MSGID_FILE_SET_ATTRIBUTES or MSGID_FILE_SET_SHORT_NAME to SbieSvc and cause the SYSTEM service to open and modify an existing file outside the sandbox. The direct primitive changes file attributes, timestamps, writeability, or 8.3 short names; a short-name redirection can additionally contribute to SYSTEM code execution when a privileged process resolves an attacker-controlled short-name path in a location SbieSvc can open. This vulnerability is fixed in 1.18.6.

Title
Kiteworks Core Sandbox Escape
Summary
The sandbox that isolates document conversion on a Kiteworks appliance did not fully confine the code running inside it. Code already executing within that sandbox could potentially escape its confinement and act with the privileges of the service account that runs the application, which could allow an attacker in that position to read or modify application data and configuration, or to disrupt the service on the affected appliance.

Title
Host Root Sandbox Escape in gVisor via Character Device Passthrough and CUSE
Summary
Improper Exposure of Resource to Wrong Sphere in the host file helper (gofer) in Google gVisor prior to commit 573a9e73cf844f on Linux platforms with CUSE enabled allows a local attacker with container image deployment privileges to achieve root code execution on the host system. By including a /dev/cuse character device node in a container image, opening the device passes through to the host, allowing the sandboxed attacker to register a host device and exploit CUSE unrestricted ioctl handling to overwrite root udev helper memory.
