RHSA-2026:40574
Vulnerability from csaf_redhat - Published: 2026-07-16 01:07 - Updated: 2026-10-30 07:44A flaw was found in c-ares, an asynchronous resolver library. The 'ares_dns_name_parse()' function does not properly limit the total pointer hops or assembled name length when enforcing backward DNS compression pointers. A remote attacker, operating a malicious DNS server, can send a specially crafted DNS response containing a long descending pointer chain. This can lead to excessive CPU consumption, causing the single-threaded c-ares event loop to stall and resulting in a denial of service for DNS resolution.

A flaw was found in c-ares, an asynchronous resolver library. A remote attacker can send a specially crafted DNS response that causes the `ares_dns_parse()` function to trust attacker-controlled record counts without validating if the response contains enough bytes for the claimed records. This can lead to disproportionate heap memory reservation, resulting in a memory-amplification denial of service (DoS) by degrading or denying name resolution.

A remote attacker who can supply DNS responses to an application using a vulnerable c-ares build can send a crafted DNS message containing a long compression-pointer chain that causes quadratic name-decompression work in ares_dns_name_parse(). Because c-ares uses a single-threaded event loop, a single crafted response can stall DNS resolution for the process. Impact is limited to availability; the flaw does not cause memory corruption or information disclosure. The vulnerable DNS name parser is present in c-ares 1.21 and later through 1.34.6 and is fixed in 1.34.7. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 ships c-ares 1.25.0 or 1.34.6 and is affected. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, 7, 8, and 9 ship older c-ares versions (1.10.x through 1.19.x) that do not include this parser and are not affected. Red Hat\u0027s CVSS v3.1 score is 7.5 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H), matching the upstream High rating, because one crafted response is sufficient to deny name resolution.",

A remote attacker who can supply DNS responses to an application using a vulnerable c-ares build can send a crafted DNS message in which attacker-controlled ANCOUNT, NSCOUNT, and ARCOUNT header fields are trusted by ares_dns_parse() before the library verifies that the response contains enough bytes for the claimed records. Because parsing runs before transaction ID and question validation, a very small message can trigger pre-allocation of disproportionately large resource-record arrays on the heap, and repeated malicious responses can drive large allocation and release cycles that degrade or deny name resolution. Impact is limited to availability; the flaw does not cause memory corruption or information disclosure. The vulnerable pre-allocation path was introduced with the modern DNS record parser (c-ares 1.21 and later) and is fixed in 1.34.7. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 ships c-ares 1.25.0 or 1.34.6 and is affected. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, 7, 8, and 9 ship older c-ares versions that do not include this parser and are not affected. Red Hat\u0027s severity of Important (CVSS 7.5, AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H) is higher than the upstream Moderate rating (CVSS 5.3, A:L) because Red Hat assesses the availability impact of sustained malicious DNS responses on name resolution as high.",

Drag nodes to arrange them. Double-click a related vulnerability to open it, or a source to visit its link. The Physics button on the left tunes the layout and the simulation; the legend at the bottom left hides or shows nodes by kind and by sighting type.

Nomenclature
- Seen: The vulnerability was mentioned, discussed, or observed by the user.
- Confirmed: The vulnerability has been validated from an analyst's perspective.
- Published Proof of Concept: A public proof of concept is available for this vulnerability.
- Exploited: The vulnerability was observed as exploited by the user who reported the sighting.
- Patched: The vulnerability was observed as successfully patched by the user who reported the sighting.
- Not exploited: The vulnerability was not observed as exploited by the user who reported the sighting.
- Not confirmed: The user expressed doubt about the validity of the vulnerability.
- Not patched: The vulnerability was not observed as successfully patched by the user who reported the sighting.

How durations are calculated
Following the VTEM framework (Black Hat USA 2015), time to patch starts when the vendor or a coordinator was informed, total time to patch at discovery, and disclosure to patch at public disclosure; vendor response time runs from the report to its acknowledgement. Time to exploit and time unpatched start at the earliest discovery or report, falling back to public disclosure. Unpatched time ends at the first recorded patch, or the calculation time when no patch is recorded. Exploitation to patch shows the interval between those two events; a published proof of concept is a public exploit, not exploitation.
Each result shows its source dates. A negative interval means the end event came first; when date-only inputs leave the order open, the result says so. Date-only inputs are approximate. The earliest evidence wins: KEV report dates and sightings are labelled as such. Records describing another vulnerability are listed but never calculated from, and a PoC alone does not establish exploitation. Missing patch evidence does not prove that no patch exists. Filters below change the event list only.

Related by attack behaviour
Vulnerabilities whose description is nearest to this one in the vector space of the CIRCL/vulnerability-attack-technique-biencoder model. This is a similarity search over the bi-encoder space (plain cosine), not a classification, and it has no measured accuracy.
