Title
NFSD: Protect against send buffer overflow in NFSv2 READ
Summary
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
NFSD: Protect against send buffer overflow in NFSv2 READ
Since before the git era, NFSD has conserved the number of pages
held by each nfsd thread by combining the RPC receive and send
buffers into a single array of pages. This works because there are
no cases where an operation needs a large RPC Call message and a
large RPC Reply at the same time.
Once an RPC Call has been received, svc_process() updates
svc_rqst::rq_res to describe the part of rq_pages that can be
used for constructing the Reply. This means that the send buffer
(rq_res) shrinks when the received RPC record containing the RPC
Call is large.
A client can force this shrinkage on TCP by sending a correctly-
formed RPC Call header contained in an RPC record that is
excessively large. The full maximum payload size cannot be
constructed in that case.

"value": "AV:N - The bug is in nfsd_proc_read on the in-kernel NFS server (fs/nfsd), reached by sending NFSv2 READ RPCs over TCP to port 2049; a remote client triggers it by padding a valid Call in an oversized TCP RPC record so rq_res shrinks.\nAC:L - The attacker fully controls TCP record size, READ count, and file offset, so they can reliably leave only head+2 payload pages then force a misaligned splice READ that walks past rq_page_end; no race or other attacker-uncontrollable condition is required.\nPR:N - Typical AUTH_SYS/AUTH_NULL exports accept self-asserted credentials with no cryptographic secret; the page-grab overflow runs before fh_verify, and the splice OOB path only needs a FH from an attacker-reachable export, matching prior nfsd CNA scoring as PR:N.\nUI:N - The attacking NFS client sends the crafted TCP RPC/READ itself; no administrator or end-user action on the server is required.\nS:U - Corruption stays inside the server\u0027s svc_rqst/rq_pages within the host kernel NFS authority and does not cross a VM, IOMMU, or sandbox boundary.\nC:H - Oversized READ after send-buffer shrinkage drives svc_rqst_replace_page past the reply page array into adjacent svc_rqst fields, yielding kernel memory corruption that can be leveraged for arbitrary disclosure (CWE-787).\nI:H - Unbounded replace_page writes of page pointers past rq_page_end overwrite adjacent kernel pointers and skew page lifetimes, giving an OOB-write primitive exploitable for integrity compromise and control-flow hijack.\nA:H - The same path NULL-dereferences when pages are exhausted or oopses on corrupted rq_pages/page refcounts in the nfsd thread, causing kernel crash or NFS service outage."

This works because there are\\nno cases where an operation needs a large RPC Call message and a\\nlarge RPC Reply at the same time.\\n\\nOnce an RPC Call has been received, svc_process() updates\\nsvc_rqst::rq_res to describe the part of rq_pages that can be\\nused for constructing the Reply. This means that the send buffer\\n(rq_res) shrinks when the received RPC record containing the RPC\\nCall is large.\\n\\nA client can force this shrinkage on TCP by sending a correctly-\\nformed RPC Call header contained in an RPC record that is\\nexcessively large. The full maximum payload size cannot be\\nconstructed in that case.\"}], \"cpeApplicability\": [{\"nodes\": [{\"negate\": false, \"cpeMatch\": [{\"criteria\": \"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*\", \"vulnerable\": true, \"versionEndExcluding\": \"5.10.220\", \"versionStartIncluding\": \"2.6.19\"}, {\"criteria\": \"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*\", \"vulnerable\": true, \"versionEndExcluding\": \"5.15.75\", \"versionStartIncluding\": \"2.6.19\"}, {\"criteria\": \"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*\", \"vulnerable\": true, \"versionEndExcluding\": \"5.19.17\", \"versionStartIncluding\": \"2.6.19\"}, {\"criteria\": \"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*\", \"vulnerable\": true, \"versionEndExcluding\": \"6.0.3\", \"versionStartIncluding\": \"2.6.19\"}, {\"criteria\": \"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*\", \"vulnerable\": true, \"versionEndExcluding\": \"6.1\", \"versionStartIncluding\": \"2.6.19\"}], \"operator\": \"OR\"}]}], \"providerMetadata\": {\"orgId\": \"416baaa9-dc9f-4396-8d5f-8c081fb06d67\", \"shortName\": \"Linux\", \"dateUpdated\": \"2026-05-11T19:18:57.302Z\"}}}",

Experimental. This forecast is provided for visualization only and may change without notice. Do not use it for operational decisions.
Forecast uses a logistic model when the trend is rising, or an exponential decay model when the trend is falling. Fitted via linearized least squares.

The MITRE ATT&CK techniques below are AI-generated suggestions, inferred from the description of the
vulnerability by the CIRCL/vulnerability-attack-technique-classification-roberta-base
model, served locally by ML-Gateway.
They have not been verified by an analyst and are provided for guidance only.
The approach is described in our paper Mapping CVEs to MITRE ATT&CK Techniques: A Curated Gold-Set Classifier and the Limits of LLM-Assisted Label Expansion.
Browse all ATT&CK techniques and the vulnerabilities related to each.

Vulnerabilities whose description is nearest to this one in the vector space of the CIRCL/vulnerability-attack-technique-biencoder model. This is a similarity search over the bi-encoder space (plain cosine), not a classification, and it has no measured accuracy.
