CWE-401
AllowedMissing Release of Memory after Effective Lifetime
Abstraction: Variant · Status: Draft
The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, making the memory unavailable for reallocation and reuse.
2010 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.
GHSA-6H97-83V8-3WF3
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-03-12 00:31 – Updated: 2025-03-12 00:31In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
i2c: piix4: Fix a memory leak in the EFCH MMIO support
The recently added support for EFCH MMIO regions introduced a memory leak in that code path. The leak is caused by the fact that release_resource() merely removes the resource from the tree but does not free its memory. We need to call release_mem_region() instead, which does free the memory. As a nice side effect, this brings back some symmetry between the legacy and MMIO paths.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-06-18 12:30 – Updated: 2025-11-17 21:31In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
PCI: dwc: Deallocate EPC memory on dw_pcie_ep_init() errors
If dw_pcie_ep_init() fails to perform any action after the EPC memory is initialized and the MSI memory region is allocated, the latter parts won't be undone thus causing a memory leak. Add a cleanup-on-error path to fix these leaks.

GHSA-6J92-J58G-FC8V
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-05-01 15:31 – Updated: 2025-11-12 18:31In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
btrfs: fix inode list leak during backref walking at find_parent_nodes()
During backref walking, at find_parent_nodes(), if we are dealing with a data extent and we get an error while resolving the indirect backrefs, at resolve_indirect_refs(), or in the while loop that iterates over the refs in the direct refs rbtree, we end up leaking the inode lists attached to the direct refs we have in the direct refs rbtree that were not yet added to the refs ulist passed as argument to find_parent_nodes(). Since they were not yet added to the refs ulist and prelim_release() does not free the lists, on error the caller can only free the lists attached to the refs that were added to the refs ulist, all the remaining refs get their inode lists never freed, therefore leaking their memory.
Fix this by having prelim_release() always free any attached inode list to each ref found in the rbtree, and have find_parent_nodes() set the ref's inode list to NULL once it transfers ownership of the inode list to a ref added to the refs ulist passed to find_parent_nodes().

GHSA-6JV9-X5W9-2CCM
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-06-11 13:26 – Updated: 2026-07-21 12:33Impact
The RedisArrayAggregator handler permanently leaks pooled direct-memory buffers when a Redis pipeline connection closes before a RESP array aggregate completes. The handler retains child messages in per-handler state (depths field) but defines no channelInactive, handlerRemoved, or exceptionCaught method to release them when the pipeline tears down. Because the leaked buffers are slices of PooledByteBufAllocator chunks, they prevent those chunks from being returned to the JVM-wide direct-memory pool. Repeated connection churn by any network peer monotonically drains this shared pool, eventually causing allocation failures on all Netty channels in the process.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2023-10-13 00:30 – Updated: 2024-04-04 08:36An Improper Input Validation vulnerability in the Packet Forwarding Engine of Juniper Networks Junos OS allows an unauthenticated, network-based attacker to cause memory leak, leading to Denial of Service (DoS).
On all Junos OS QFX5000 Series platforms, when pseudo-VTEP (Virtual Tunnel End Point) is configured under EVPN-VXLAN scenario, and specific DHCP packets are transmitted, DMA memory leak is observed. Continuous receipt of these specific DHCP packets will cause memory leak to reach 99% and then cause the protocols to stop working and traffic is impacted, leading to Denial of Service (DoS) condition. A manual reboot of the system recovers from the memory leak.
To confirm the memory leak, monitor for "sheaf:possible leak" and "vtep not found" messages in the logs.
This issue affects:
Juniper Networks Junos OS QFX5000 Series:
- All versions prior to 20.4R3-S6;
- 21.1 versions prior to 21.1R3-S5;
- 21.2 versions prior to 21.2R3-S5;
- 21.3 versions prior to 21.3R3-S4;
- 21.4 versions prior to 21.4R3-S3;
- 22.1 versions prior to 22.1R3-S2;
- 22.2 versions prior to 22.2R2-S2, 22.2R3;
- 22.3 versions prior to 22.3R2-S1, 22.3R3;
- 22.4 versions prior to 22.4R1-S2, 22.4R2.

Mitigation MIT-41
Strategy: Libraries or Frameworks
- Choose a language or tool that provides automatic memory management, or makes manual memory management less error-prone.
- For example, glibc in Linux provides protection against free of invalid pointers.
- When using Xcode to target OS X or iOS, enable automatic reference counting (ARC) [REF-391].
- To help correctly and consistently manage memory when programming in C++, consider using a smart pointer class such as std::auto_ptr (defined by ISO/IEC ISO/IEC 14882:2003), std::shared_ptr and std::unique_ptr (specified by an upcoming revision of the C++ standard, informally referred to as C++ 1x), or equivalent solutions such as Boost.
Mitigation
Use an abstraction library to abstract away risky APIs. Not a complete solution.
Mitigation
Consider using the Boehm-Demers-Weiser garbage collector (bdwgc), which can help avoid leaks.
No CAPEC attack patterns related to this CWE.
