Vulnerability from variot

Array index error in the xnu (Mach) kernel in Apple Mac OS X 10.5 before 10.5.7 allows local users to gain privileges or cause a denial of service (system shutdown) via unspecified vectors related to workqueues. Apple Mac OS X is prone to a local privilege-escalation vulnerability. A local attacker can exploit this issue to gain kernel-level privileges, which may lead to a complete compromise of the affected computer. NOTE: This issue was previously covered in BID 34926 (Apple Mac OS X 2009-002 Multiple Security Vulnerabilities), but has been assigned its own record to better document it. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1

iDefense Security Advisory 05.12.09 http://labs.idefense.com/intelligence/vulnerabilities/ May 12, 2009

I. OS X is the tenth major version of Apple's operating system for Macintosh computers and is Unix-based.

For more information, see the vendor's site found at the following link.

http://www.apple.com/support/leopard/internet/

II. This allows the kernel to schedule events to take place in a task.

III. Upon successful exploitation, the attacker could elevate privileges by changing the effective user id to root of an attacker controlled process. Alternatively an attacker could also add or alter kernel code in memory that is commonly referred to as a rootkit.

IV.

V. WORKAROUND

iDefense is currently unaware of any workaround for this issue.

VI. VENDOR RESPONSE

Apple Inc. has released a patch which addresses this issue. For more information, consult their advisory at the following URL:

"data": "Array index error in the xnu (Mach) kernel in Apple Mac OS X 10.5 before 10.5.7 allows local users to gain privileges or cause a denial of service (system shutdown) via unspecified vectors related to workqueues. Apple Mac OS X is prone to a local privilege-escalation vulnerability. \nA local attacker can exploit this issue to gain kernel-level privileges, which may lead to a complete compromise of the affected computer. \nNOTE: This issue was previously covered in BID 34926 (Apple Mac OS X 2009-002 Multiple Security Vulnerabilities), but has been assigned its own record to better document it. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----\nHash: SHA1\n\niDefense Security Advisory 05.12.09\nhttp://labs.idefense.com/intelligence/vulnerabilities/\nMay 12, 2009\n\nI. OS X\nis the tenth major version of Apple\u0027s operating system for Macintosh\ncomputers and is Unix-based. \n\nFor more information, see the vendor\u0027s site found at the following link. \n\nhttp://www.apple.com/support/leopard/internet/\n\nII. This allows the\nkernel to schedule events to take place in a task. \n\nIII. Upon successful\nexploitation, the attacker could elevate privileges by changing the\neffective user id to root of an attacker controlled process. \nAlternatively an attacker could also add or alter kernel code in memory\nthat is commonly referred to as a rootkit. \n\nIV. \n\nV. WORKAROUND\n\niDefense is currently unaware of any workaround for this issue. \n\nVI. VENDOR RESPONSE\n\nApple Inc. has released a patch which addresses this issue.
