Summary
SSA-327438: Multiple Vulnerabilities in SCALANCE LPE9403
Notes
Summary: SCALANCE LPE9403 is affected by multiple vulnerabilities which lead to a compromise in availability, integrity and confidentiality. Siemens has released a new version for SCALANCE LPE9403 and recommends to update to the latest version. Siemens recommends specific countermeasures for products where fixes are not, or not yet available.
General Recommendations: As a general security measure, Siemens strongly recommends to protect network access to devices with appropriate mechanisms. In order to operate the devices in a protected IT environment, Siemens recommends to configure the environment according to Siemens' operational guidelines for Industrial Security (Download: https://www.siemens.com/cert/operational-guidelines-industrial-security), and to follow the recommendations in the product manuals. Additional information on Industrial Security by Siemens can be found at: https://www.siemens.com/industrialsecurity
Additional Resources: For further inquiries on security vulnerabilities in Siemens products and solutions, please contact the Siemens ProductCERT: https://www.siemens.com/cert/advisories
Terms of Use: The use of Siemens Security Advisories is subject to the terms and conditions listed on: https://www.siemens.com/productcert/terms-of-use.

Affected devices do not properly assign permissions to critical ressources. This could allow a non-privileged local attacker to access sensitive information stored on the device.

CWE-732 - Incorrect Permission Assignment for Critical Resource
Affected products
Product Identifier Version Remediation
SCALANCE LPE9403 (6GK5998-3GS00-2AC2) < V4.0.0
Siemens / SCALANCE LPE9403 (6GK5998-3GS00-2AC2)
6GK5998-3GS00-2AC2 vers:intdot/<4.0.0
Mitigation
Vendor Fix fix

Affected devices are vulnerable to path traversal attacks. This could allow a privileged local attacker to restore backups that are outside the backup folder.

CWE-35 - Path Traversal: '.../...//'
Affected products
Product Identifier Version Remediation
SCALANCE LPE9403 (6GK5998-3GS00-2AC2) < V4.0.0
Siemens / SCALANCE LPE9403 (6GK5998-3GS00-2AC2)
6GK5998-3GS00-2AC2 vers:intdot/<4.0.0
Mitigation
Vendor Fix fix

Affected devices do not properly assign permissions to critical ressources. This could allow a non-privileged local attacker to interact with the backupmanager service.

CWE-732 - Incorrect Permission Assignment for Critical Resource
Affected products
Product Identifier Version Remediation
SCALANCE LPE9403 (6GK5998-3GS00-2AC2) < V4.0.0
Siemens / SCALANCE LPE9403 (6GK5998-3GS00-2AC2)
6GK5998-3GS00-2AC2 vers:intdot/<4.0.0
Mitigation
Vendor Fix fix

Affected devices do not properly validate incoming Profinet packets. An unauthenticated remote attacker can exploit this flaw by sending a specially crafted malicious packet, which leads to a crash of the dcpd process.

CWE-457 - Use of Uninitialized Variable
Affected products
Product Identifier Version Remediation
SCALANCE LPE9403 (6GK5998-3GS00-2AC2) < V4.0.0
Siemens / SCALANCE LPE9403 (6GK5998-3GS00-2AC2)
6GK5998-3GS00-2AC2 vers:intdot/<4.0.0
Mitigation
Vendor Fix fix

Affected devices do not properly validate incoming Profinet packets. An unauthenticated remote attacker can exploit this flaw by sending a specially crafted malicious packet, which leads to a crash of the dcpd process.

CWE-476 - NULL Pointer Dereference
Affected products
Product Identifier Version Remediation
SCALANCE LPE9403 (6GK5998-3GS00-2AC2) < V4.0.0
Siemens / SCALANCE LPE9403 (6GK5998-3GS00-2AC2)
6GK5998-3GS00-2AC2 vers:intdot/<4.0.0
Mitigation
Vendor Fix fix

Affected devices do not properly validate incoming Profinet packets. An unauthenticated remote attacker can exploit this flaw by sending a specially crafted malicious packet, which leads to a crash of the dcpd process.

CWE-125 - Out-of-bounds Read
Affected products
Product Identifier Version Remediation
SCALANCE LPE9403 (6GK5998-3GS00-2AC2) < V4.0.0
Siemens / SCALANCE LPE9403 (6GK5998-3GS00-2AC2)
6GK5998-3GS00-2AC2 vers:intdot/<4.0.0
Mitigation
Vendor Fix fix

Affected devices do not properly handle multiple incoming Profinet packets received in rapid succession. An unauthenticated remote attacker can exploit this flaw by sending multiple packets in a very short time frame, which leads to a crash of the dcpd process.

CWE-125 - Out-of-bounds Read
Affected products
Product Identifier Version Remediation
SCALANCE LPE9403 (6GK5998-3GS00-2AC2)
Siemens / SCALANCE LPE9403 (6GK5998-3GS00-2AC2)
6GK5998-3GS00-2AC2 vers:all/*
Mitigation
No Fix Planned

Affected devices are vulnerable to a stack-based buffer overflow. This could allow a non-privileged local attacker to execute arbitrary code on the device or to cause a denial of service condition.

CWE-121 - Stack-based Buffer Overflow
Affected products
Product Identifier Version Remediation
SCALANCE LPE9403 (6GK5998-3GS00-2AC2) < V4.0.0
