Title
blk-mq: release crypto keyslot before reporting I/O complete
Summary
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: blk-mq: release crypto keyslot before reporting I/O complete Once all I/O using a blk_crypto_key has completed, filesystems can call blk_crypto_evict_key(). However, the block layer currently doesn't call blk_crypto_put_keyslot() until the request is being freed, which happens after upper layers have been told (via bio_endio()) the I/O has completed. This causes a race condition where blk_crypto_evict_key() can see 'slot_refs != 0' without there being an actual bug. This makes __blk_crypto_evict_key() hit the 'WARN_ON_ONCE(atomic_read(&slot->slot_refs) != 0)' and return without doing anything, eventually causing a use-after-free in blk_crypto_reprogram_all_keys(). (This is a very rare bug and has only been seen when per-file keys are being used with fscrypt.) There are two options to fix this: either release the keyslot before bio_endio() is called on the request's last bio, or make __blk_crypto_evict_key() ignore slot_refs. Let's go with the first solution, since it preserves the ability to report bugs (via WARN_ON_ONCE) where a key is evicted while still in-use.

No network protocol handler is involved.
AC:L - The attacker controls both sides of the race — submitting encrypted I/O and forcing key eviction — and can retry the loop indefinitely across threads/CPUs until the window between bio_endio() and blk_mq_free_request() is hit. The subsequent reprogram_all_keys() trigger occurs routinely on suspend/resume and UFS error recovery, so no attacker-uncontrollable precondition gates exploitation.
PR:L - Only an ordinary unprivileged local account (or an Android app) with write access to an fscrypt-encrypted directory is needed; per-file keys are the default fscrypt mode and every app's data directory qualifies. No capabilities or root are required.
UI:N - The attacker performs every step — the I/O, the key eviction, and the heap spray — with no action from any other user. Device reset/resume that consumes the dangling pointer happens automatically or can be induced by the attacker.
S:U - The use-after-free and the resulting memory corruption occur within the kernel's own security authority; no VM, IOMMU, or sandbox boundary is crossed.
C:H - The freed blk_crypto_key is re-read and its attacker-controlled crypto_mode is used as an unbounded array index in ufshcd_crypto_keyslot_program(), yielding an arbitrary out-of-bounds kernel read oracle; the stale keyslot also causes stored data to be decrypted under the wrong key, compromising fscrypt's confidentiality guarantees.
I:H - The same UAF gives an attacker-controlled key->size to a memcpy into a 72-byte stack union, an unbounded stack buffer overflow with attacker-supplied bytes suitable for control-flow hijacking; additionally, attacker-chosen key material can be programmed into hardware keyslots and on-disk data silently encrypted under the wrong key.
A:H - The immediate effect is a WARN_ON_ONCE (a panic under panic_on_warn) and a use-after-free that dereferences freed/wild pointers during UFS reset or resume, causing kernel oops or panic; corrupting the hardware keyslot state also breaks storage encryption and can render the filesystem unusable."

Related by attack behaviour

Vulnerabilities whose description is nearest to this one in the vector space of the CIRCL/vulnerability-attack-technique-biencoder model. This is a similarity search over the bi-encoder space (plain cosine), not a classification, and it has no measured accuracy.
