Title
power: supply: rt9455: Fix use-after-free in power_supply_changed()
Summary
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
power: supply: rt9455: Fix use-after-free in power_supply_changed()
Using the `devm_` variant for requesting IRQ _before_ the `devm_`
variant for allocating/registering the `power_supply` handle, means that
the `power_supply` handle will be deallocated/unregistered _before_ the
interrupt handler (since `devm_` naturally deallocates in reverse
allocation order). This means that during removal, there is a race
condition where an interrupt can fire just _after_ the `power_supply`
handle has been freed, *but* just _before_ the corresponding
unregistration of the IRQ handler has run.
This will lead to the IRQ handler calling `power_supply_changed()` with
a freed `power_supply` handle. Which usually crashes the system or
otherwise silently corrupts the memory...
Note that there is a similar situation which can also happen during
`probe()`; the possibility of an interrupt firing _before_ registering
the `power_supply` handle. This would then lead to the nasty situation
of using the `power_supply` handle *uninitialized* in
`power_supply_changed()`.
Fix this racy use-after-free by making sure the IRQ is requested _after_
the registration of the `power_supply` handle.
AV:L - Exploitation requires local driver teardown (module unload, sysfs unbind, or shutdown/reboot) that runs `devres_release_all()`; the vulnerable `power_supply_changed()` path is only reachable from the on-chip IRQ handler during that window, not from any network-facing protocol.
AC:L - An attacker who can initiate driver removal can repeatedly assert charger interrupts (USB plug/unplug, charge events) to hit the narrow race between `power_supply_unregister()` and IRQ release; this is a standard attacker-controlled UAF race, not a layout-dependent condition.
PR:N - On battery-powered embedded/mobile platforms with this IC, an attacker with brief physical possession can force power-off/reboot (no Linux account or capability) while manipulating the charging port to fire IRQs during devm teardown; explicit unbind/rmmod also works but is not the only path.
UI:N - No victim interaction is required beyond the attacker’s own physical control of the device and charging port; exploitation does not depend on the victim opening files, mounting filesystems, or approving prompts.
S:U - Impact is confined to kernel memory corruption and privilege escalation within the kernel security boundary; it does not cross VM, container, or IOMMU isolation boundaries.
C:H - The IRQ handler calls `power_supply_changed()` on a freed `struct power_supply`, performing spinlock operations and `schedule_work()` on freed heap memory, which is a classic UAF that can be turned into arbitrary kernel memory disclosure.
I:H - The same UAF writes to freed object fields (`changed`, locks, workqueue) and can be combined with heap grooming for arbitrary kernel writes or control-flow hijack, as noted by the fix author (“silently corrupts the memory”).
A:H - Use-after-free in interrupt context typically causes immediate kernel oops/panic or silent memory corruption; the commit explicitly states this “usually crashes the system.”"

The MITRE ATT&CK techniques below are AI-generated suggestions, inferred from the description of the
vulnerability by the CIRCL/vulnerability-attack-technique-classification-roberta-base
model, served locally by ML-Gateway.
They have not been verified by an analyst and are provided for guidance only.
The approach is described in our paper Mapping CVEs to MITRE ATT&CK Techniques: A Curated Gold-Set Classifier and the Limits of LLM-Assisted Label Expansion.
