ext4: fix slab-use-after-free in ext4_split_extent_at()
Summary
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
ext4: fix slab-use-after-free in ext4_split_extent_at()
We hit the following use-after-free:

==================================================================
The flow of issue triggering is as follows:
ext4_split_extent_at
path = *ppath
ext4_ext_insert_extent(ppath)
ext4_ext_create_new_leaf(ppath)
ext4_find_extent(orig_path)
path = *orig_path
read_extent_tree_block
// return -ENOMEM or -EIO
ext4_free_ext_path(path)
kfree(path)
*orig_path = NULL
a. If err is -ENOMEM:
ext4_ext_dirty(path + path->p_depth)
// path use-after-free !!!
b. If err is -EIO and we have EXT_DEBUG defined:
ext4_ext_show_leaf(path)
eh = path[depth].p_hdr
// path also use-after-free !!!
So when trying to zeroout or fix the extent length, call ext4_find_extent()
to update the path.
In addition we use *ppath directly as an ext4_ext_show_leaf() input to
avoid possible use-after-free when EXT_DEBUG is defined, and to avoid
unnecessary path updates.

"value": "AV:L - The vulnerable code is the ext4 extent-splitting path reached through ordinary file I/O (write/fallocate plus writeback) on a locally mounted filesystem. No network protocol handler is involved, so local access to the system is required.\nAC:L - Every precondition is attacker-shaped: the extent-tree depth and fullness are controlled by fragmenting the attacker\u0027s own file, writeback is forced on demand with fsync/sync_file_range, and the -ENOMEM that triggers the fallthrough is inducible by an unprivileged task creating memory pressure against GFP_NOFS allocations, which cannot fall back on filesystem reclaim. The reallocation window is widened by the sleeping ext4_ext_zeroout() block I/O on the same code path.\nPR:L - Only an unprivileged local account with write access to any ext4 file (world-writable /tmp or the user\u0027s home directory) is needed; no capability, mount privilege, or admin right is checked anywhere along ext4_do_writepages \u2192 ext4_ext_map_blocks \u2192 ext4_split_extent_at.\nUI:N - The attacker operates entirely on files they own and triggers writeback themselves; no victim action, mount of a crafted image, or administrator involvement is required.\nS:U - The use-after-free corrupts kernel slab memory within the same kernel security authority, with no crossing of a VM, IOMMU, or hypervisor boundary.\nC:H - The freed struct ext4_ext_path array lives in a sprayable general kmalloc cache, and the stale p_depth/p_bh fields are dereferenced, so a reallocated object lets the attacker point ext4 at arbitrary kernel addresses and observe results, giving disclosure of arbitrary kernel memory.\nI:H - __ext4_ext_dirty() performs set_buffer_verified() (an arbitrary bit set) and ext4_extent_block_csum_set() (a controlled 4-byte write through a forged buffer_head b_data pointer) on the reallocated object, a classic UAF write primitive usable for control-flow hijack; ext4_ext_zeroout() on the stale extent can additionally zero incorrect on-disk blocks.\nA:H - Even without successful heap grooming the dangling path dereference reliably oopses or panics the kernel in a writeback kworker, as demonstrated by the reported KASAN slab-use-after-free, and it can be retriggered at will."

Experimental. This forecast is provided for visualization only and may change without notice. Do not use it for operational decisions.
Forecast uses a logistic model when the trend is rising, or an exponential decay model when the trend is falling. Fitted via linearized least squares.

The MITRE ATT&CK techniques below are AI-generated suggestions, inferred from the description of the
vulnerability by the CIRCL/vulnerability-attack-technique-classification-roberta-base
model, served locally by ML-Gateway.
They have not been verified by an analyst and are provided for guidance only.
The approach is described in our paper Mapping CVEs to MITRE ATT&CK Techniques: A Curated Gold-Set Classifier and the Limits of LLM-Assisted Label Expansion.
Browse all ATT&CK techniques and the vulnerabilities related to each.

Related by attack behaviour
Vulnerabilities whose description is nearest to this one in the vector space of the CIRCL/vulnerability-attack-technique-biencoder model. This is a similarity search over the bi-encoder space (plain cosine), not a classification, and it has no measured accuracy.
