Title
PCI: Add missing bridge lock to pci_bus_lock()
Summary
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
PCI: Add missing bridge lock to pci_bus_lock()
One of the true positives that the cfg_access_lock lockdep effort
identified is this sequence:
WARNING: CPU: 14 PID: 1 at drivers/pci/pci.c:4886 pci_bridge_secondary_bus_reset+0x5d/0x70
RIP: 0010:pci_bridge_secondary_bus_reset+0x5d/0x70
Call Trace:

vmd_probe+0x778/0xa10
pci_device_probe+0x95/0x120
Where pci_reset_bus() users are triggering unlocked secondary bus resets.
Ironically pci_bus_reset(), several calls down from pci_reset_bus(), uses
pci_bus_lock() before issuing the reset which locks everything *but* the
bridge itself.
For the same motivation as adding:
bridge = pci_upstream_bridge(dev);
if (bridge)
pci_dev_lock(bridge);
to pci_reset_function() for the "bus" and "cxl_bus" reset cases, add
pci_dev_lock() for @bus->self to pci_bus_lock().

No remote or adjacent-network data path reaches `pci_bus_lock()`.
AC:L - The attacker controls both sides of the race: they trigger the bus reset on demand via the VFIO ioctl, and the bridge stays unlocked for the full `msleep(2)` plus up to ~1 s of `pci_bridge_wait_for_secondary_bus()` link polling, so no precise timing or unattainable memory layout is needed.
PR:L - `VFIO_DEVICE_PCI_HOT_RESET` requires only an open VFIO device fd, which libvirt/QEMU and DPDK deployments routinely hand to an unprivileged user; no root or capability in the init namespace is needed to drive `pci_reset_bus()` repeatedly.
UI:N - The attacker issues the ioctl (or repeatedly opens/closes the VFIO device) entirely on their own; no victim action is required to reach the unlocked reset.
S:U - The corruption and any resulting crash stay within the kernel's own security authority — there is no guest-to-host escape or IOMMU/DMA boundary crossing, and VFIO already requires all bus-affected devices to be in the caller's device set.
C:H - The bridge's `device_lock` is not held across the sleeping reset, so driver unbind/remove and PM transitions on the bridge run unsynchronized against an in-flight reset that keeps dereferencing `bus->self` and its port-service state, giving a use-after-free class read primitive over freed kernel objects.
I:H - Without `pci_cfg_access_lock()` on the bridge, concurrent config writes and a parallel `pci_dev_save_and_disable()`/`pci_dev_restore()` on the same bridge interleave with the `PCI_BRIDGE_CONTROL` read-modify-write, corrupting bridge state (bus numbers, MMIO windows, COMMAND, control bits); the same missing `device_lock` makes the driver-model race exploitable for kernel memory corruption.
A:H - A lost update can leave `PCI_BRIDGE_CTL_BUS_RESET` asserted, permanently removing every device behind the bridge (potentially the root storage or network controller), and the unlocked unbind/remove-versus-reset race produces oopses and hangs; the reset is repeatable at will."

The MITRE ATT&CK techniques below are AI-generated suggestions, inferred from the description of the
vulnerability by the CIRCL/vulnerability-attack-technique-classification-roberta-base
model, served locally by ML-Gateway.
They have not been verified by an analyst and are provided for guidance only.
The approach is described in our paper Mapping CVEs to MITRE ATT&CK Techniques: A Curated Gold-Set Classifier and the Limits of LLM-Assisted Label Expansion.
Browse all ATT&CK techniques and the vulnerabilities related to each.

Related by attack behaviour
Vulnerabilities whose description is nearest to this one in the vector space of the CIRCL/vulnerability-attack-technique-biencoder model. This is a similarity search over the bi-encoder space (plain cosine), not a classification, and it has no measured accuracy.
