Title
mm: list_lru: fix UAF for memory cgroup
Summary
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mm: list_lru: fix UAF for memory cgroup The mem_cgroup_from_slab_obj() is supposed to be called under rcu lock or cgroup_mutex or others which could prevent returned memcg from being freed. Fix it by adding missing rcu read lock. Found by code inspection. [songmuchun@bytedance.com: only grab rcu lock when necessary, per Vlastimil
AV:L - The vulnerable code is reached through ordinary filesystem syscalls (open/stat/close/unlink driving d_lru_add/d_lru_del and inode LRU add/del) plus local cgroup manipulation to trigger the memcg teardown. No network peer can drive the memcg-free side of the race, so this requires local system access.
AC:L - The attacker controls both sides of the race — one thread rmdirs a cgroup it created to force memcg offline and RCU-deferred free, while another thread loops dentry/inode LRU operations on objects charged to that memcg — and can retry indefinitely. On CONFIG_PREEMPT and especially PREEMPT_RT kernels (where list_lru_add's spin_lock is a sleeping rtmutex) the window between reading objcg->memcg and dereferencing it is readily hit.
PR:L - Only an unprivileged local account is needed: the LRU paths are hit by unprivileged file operations with no capability check, and cgroup creation/removal is available to normal users via systemd's delegated user slice or to any container tenant. No real root is required anywhere on the path.
UI:N - The attacker's own threads perform every step — populating a cgroup, tearing it down, and hammering the dentry/inode LRU paths. No victim action is involved.
S:U - The use-after-free corrupts kernel memory managed by the same kernel security authority; there is no VM, IOMMU, or hypervisor boundary crossed.
C:H - Reading memcg->kmemcg_id from freed memory steers list_lru_from_memcg_idx() into another cgroup's LRU, exposing and cross-linking objects across memcg boundaries, and a groomed reallocation of the freed mem_cgroup gives the attacker control over the pointer chain, which is leverageable for arbitrary kernel memory disclosure.
I:H - set_shrinker_bit() performs set_bit() through memcg->nodeinfo[nid]->shrinker_info read from the freed object, so a reallocated and attacker-controlled mem_cgroup turns this into a write primitive at a chosen address; the wrong-index list_add_tail()/list_del_init() also corrupt live list_lru state.
A:H - A garbage kmemcg_id makes xa_load() return NULL and list_add_tail() dereference it, producing an immediate kernel oops, and the resulting list_lru list corruption and nr_items underflow crash the shrinker later — a repeatable panic on core dcache/icache paths."

Related by attack behaviour

Vulnerabilities whose description is nearest to this one in the vector space of the CIRCL/vulnerability-attack-technique-biencoder model. This is a similarity search over the bi-encoder space (plain cosine), not a classification, and it has no measured accuracy.
