Title
fs/ntfs3: Return error for inconsistent extended attributes
Summary
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fs/ntfs3: Return error for inconsistent extended attributes ntfs_read_ea is called when we want to read extended attributes. There are some sanity checks for the validity of the EAs. However, it fails to return a proper error code for the inconsistent attributes, which might lead to unpredicted memory accesses after return. "value": "AV:L - The bug is reached through the local `setxattr(2)` syscall on a mounted ntfs3 volume (`path_setxattr` \u2192 `ntfs_setxattr` \u2192 `ntfs_set_ea`), requiring local system access. No network or remote protocol path exists into ntfs3 xattr handling.\nAC:L - The attacker fully controls both inputs \u2014 the on-disk `EA_INFO.size`/non-resident `ATTR_EA` layout that makes `ntfs_read_ea()` return 0 with a NULL buffer, and the `setxattr` name/value that determines the undersized `kzalloc(add)`. There is no race and no condition outside the attacker\u0027s control; the OOB write offset is deterministically chosen.\nPR:L - The `ntfs_other_xattr_handler` has an empty prefix, so a plain `user.*` xattr set by any unprivileged user on a file they own reaches `ntfs_set_ea()` with no capability check. Only an ordinary local account is needed once the crafted volume is mounted.\nUI:N - In the realistic deployment (kiosk, shared workstation, Android/embedded/automotive with udisks2 or a media daemon auto-mounting removable NTFS read-write), the attacker performs every step themselves \u2014 insert the media, then issue the syscall \u2014 with no distinct victim action required at exploitation time.\nS:U - The heap corruption occurs in kernel memory belonging to the same security authority as the vulnerable component; there is no VM, IOMMU, or sandbox boundary crossed.\nC:H - After the failed consistency check, `memcpy(p, ea_all, size)` / `ntfs_sb_write_run(..., ea_all, size, ...)` copies up to 64 KiB read out of bounds from a small `kzalloc` buffer into the file\u0027s EA, which the attacker reads back with `getxattr` \u2014 a direct, large kernel heap disclosure. The write primitive additionally enables arbitrary read via corrupted kernel structures.\nI:H - `new_ea = Add2Ptr(ea_all, size)` writes past the undersized allocation at an attacker-chosen offset (up to 64 KiB) with attacker-controlled content of attacker-controlled length, before any bounds check. This is a controlled heap out-of-bounds write suitable for corrupting adjacent slab objects and hijacking control flow.\nA:H - The bug reproduces as a KASAN use-after-free/out-of-bounds write that panics the kernel, and unconstrained slab corruption reliably crashes the system even when not exploited for escalation."

Related by attack behaviour

Vulnerabilities whose description is nearest to this one in the vector space of the CIRCL/vulnerability-attack-technique-biencoder model. This is a similarity search over the bi-encoder space (plain cosine), not a classification, and it has no measured accuracy.
