Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

ima: Fix stack-out-of-bounds in is_bprm_creds_for_exec()

KASAN reported a stack-out-of-bounds access in ima_appraise_measurement from is_bprm_creds_for_exec:

BUG: KASAN: stack-out-of-bounds in ima_appraise_measurement+0x12dc/0x16a0 Read of size 1 at addr ffffc9000160f940 by task sudo/550 The buggy address belongs to stack of task sudo/550 and is located at offset 24 in frame: ima_appraise_measurement+0x0/0x16a0 This frame has 2 objects: [48, 56) 'file' [80, 148) 'hash'

This is caused by using container_of on the *file pointer. This offset calculation is what triggers the stack-out-of-bounds error.

In order to fix this, pass in a bprm_is_check boolean which can be set depending on how process_measurement is called. If the caller has a linux_binprm pointer and the function is BPRM_CHECK we can determine is_check and set it then. Otherwise set it to false.

Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

exfat: check if cluster num is valid

Syzbot reported slab-out-of-bounds read in exfat_clear_bitmap. This was triggered by reproducer calling truncute with size 0, which causes the following trace:

BUG: KASAN: slab-out-of-bounds in exfat_clear_bitmap+0x147/0x490 fs/exfat/balloc.c:174 Read of size 8 at addr ffff888115aa9508 by task syz-executor251/365

Move the is_valid_cluster() helper from fatent.c to a common header to make it reusable in other *.c files. And add is_valid_cluster() to validate if cluster number is within valid range in exfat_clear_bitmap() and exfat_set_bitmap().

Details

An information leak exists in the handling of the MXIT protocol in Pidgin. Specially crafted MXIT data sent via the server could potentially result in an out-of-bounds read. A malicious user, server, or man-in-the-middle can send an invalid size for an avatar which will trigger an out-of-bounds read vulnerability. This could result in a denial of service or copy data from memory to the file, resulting in an information leak if the avatar is sent to another user.

GHSA-CWJM-393V-32X2

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-09-22 21:30 – Updated: 2025-12-12 21:31
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

audit: fix out-of-bounds read in audit_compare_dname_path()

When a watch on dir=/ is combined with an fsnotify event for a single-character name directly under / (e.g., creating /a), an out-of-bounds read can occur in audit_compare_dname_path().

The helper parent_len() returns 1 for "/". In audit_compare_dname_path(), when parentlen equals the full path length (1), the code sets p = path + 1 and pathlen = 1 - 1 = 0. The subsequent loop then dereferences p[pathlen - 1] (i.e., p[-1]), causing an out-of-bounds read.

Fix this by adding a pathlen > 0 check to the while loop condition to prevent the out-of-bounds access.

  "details": "In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:\n\naudit: fix out-of-bounds read in audit_compare_dname_path()\n\nWhen a watch on dir=/ is combined with an fsnotify event for a\nsingle-character name directly under / (e.g., creating /a), an\nout-of-bounds read can occur in audit_compare_dname_path().\n\nThe helper parent_len() returns 1 for \"/\". In audit_compare_dname_path(),\nwhen parentlen equals the full path length (1), the code sets p = path + 1\nand pathlen = 1 - 1 = 0. The subsequent loop then dereferences\np[pathlen - 1] (i.e., p[-1]), causing an out-of-bounds read.\n\nFix this by adding a pathlen \u003e 0 check to the while loop condition\nto prevent the out-of-bounds access.\n\n[PM: subject tweak, sign-off email fixes]",

Details

When performing the inference shape operation of Affine, Concat, MatMul, ArgMinMax, EmbeddingLookup, and Gather operators, if the input shape size is 0, it will access data outside of bounds of shape which allocated from heap buffers.

Mitigation MIT-5
Implementation

Strategy: Input Validation

  • Assume all input is malicious. Use an "accept known good" input validation strategy, i.e., use a list of acceptable inputs that strictly conform to specifications. Reject any input that does not strictly conform to specifications, or transform it into something that does.
  • When performing input validation, consider all potentially relevant properties, including length, type of input, the full range of acceptable values, missing or extra inputs, syntax, consistency across related fields, and conformance to business rules. As an example of business rule logic, "boat" may be syntactically valid because it only contains alphanumeric characters, but it is not valid if the input is only expected to contain colors such as "red" or "blue."
  • Do not rely exclusively on looking for malicious or malformed inputs. This is likely to miss at least one undesirable input, especially if the code's environment changes. This can give attackers enough room to bypass the intended validation. However, denylists can be useful for detecting potential attacks or determining which inputs are so malformed that they should be rejected outright.
  • To reduce the likelihood of introducing an out-of-bounds read, ensure that you validate and ensure correct calculations for any length argument, buffer size calculation, or offset. Be especially careful of relying on a sentinel (i.e. special character such as NUL) in untrusted inputs.
Mitigation
Architecture and Design

Strategy: Language Selection

Use a language that provides appropriate memory abstractions.

CAPEC-540: Overread Buffers

An adversary attacks a target by providing input that causes an application to read beyond the boundary of a defined buffer. This typically occurs when a value influencing where to start or stop reading is set to reflect positions outside of the valid memory location of the buffer. This type of attack may result in exposure of sensitive information, a system crash, or arbitrary code execution.
