CWE-1236

Allowed

Improper Neutralization of Formula Elements in a CSV File

Abstraction: Base · Status: Incomplete

The product saves user-provided information into a Comma-Separated Value (CSV) file, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could be interpreted as a command when the file is opened by a spreadsheet product.

401 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

Title
Snipe-IT: CSV formula injection in Activity Report export
Summary
Snipe-IT is an IT asset/license management system. Prior to 8.5.0, Actionlog::logaction() stores the request User-Agent header and ReportsController::postActivityReport() writes that value to the Activity Report CSV without formula escaping, allowing a low-privileged authenticated user to store a formula-like User-Agent that may execute when a report viewer opens the exported CSV in spreadsheet software. This issue is fixed in version 8.5.0.

Title
Actual: CSV Formula Injection in Transaction Export via Imported Payee/Notes Fields
Summary
Actual is a local-first personal finance tool. Prior to 26.6.0, exportToCSV and exportQueryToCSV in packages/loot-core/src/server/transactions/export/export-to-csv.ts pass user-controlled Payee, Notes, Account, and Category strings to csv-stringify with no cast callback and no formula-prefix neutralization. Strings that begin with equals sign, plus, minus, at sign, tab, or carriage return survive verbatim into the exported CSV, and when a recipient opens the file in Excel, LibreOffice Calc, or Google Sheets, the strings are interpreted as formulas, enabling transaction data exfiltration and attacker-chosen spreadsheet display values. This issue is fixed in version 26.6.0.

Title
Poweradmin: CSV Injection in log export endpoints allows formula execution in spreadsheet applications
Summary
Poweradmin is a web-based DNS administration tool for PowerDNS server. Versions prior to 4.2.4 and 4.3.3 are vulnerable to CSV Injection (Formula Injection) in its log export functionality. User-controlled data — specifically the username field — is written to exported CSV files without sanitizing formula trigger characters (=, +, -, @). When an administrator exports activity logs and opens the resulting CSV in a spreadsheet application (Microsoft Excel, LibreOffice Calc, Google Sheets), any formula stored in a username is executed by the application. This can be used for phishing attacks against administrators or data exfiltration. Versions 4.2.4 and 4.3.3 patch the issue.

Title
Actual: CSV Formula Injection in `@actual-app/cli` `--format csv` Output via Custom `escapeCsv` Helper
Summary
Actual is a local-first personal finance app. Prior to 26.6.0, @actual-app/cli ships a hand-rolled CSV serializer in packages/cli/src/output.ts used whenever the global --format csv option is passed, whose escapeCsv helper only handles RFC 4180 delimiter, quote, and newline escaping and does not neutralize standard CSV formula-injection prefixes. Any CLI command that streams an object array containing user-controlled strings, including transactions list, accounts list, payees list, categories list, tags list, category-groups list, rules list, schedules list, and query, can emit cells that auto-evaluate when the resulting CSV is opened in Excel, LibreOffice Calc, or Google Sheets, enabling data exfiltration and arbitrary formula execution. This issue is fixed in version 26.6.0.

Title
Kimai: Formula Injection via tag names in XLSX export
Summary
Kimai is an open-source time tracking application. From version 2.27.0 to before version 2.54.0, any ROLE_USER can create a tag with a formula string as its name (e.g. =SUM(54+51)) via POST /api/tags and assign it to a timesheet. When an admin exports timesheets to XLSX, ArrayFormatter.formatValue() joins tag names with implode() and returns the result unchanged. OpenSpout promotes any =-prefixed string to a FormulaCell, writing <f>SUM(54+51)</f> into the XLSX archive. Excel evaluates the formula when the file is opened. This issue has been patched in version 2.54.0.

Title
RT: Spreadsheet downloads vulnerable to CSV/formula injection in Microsoft Excel and similar apps
Summary
RT is an open source, enterprise-grade issue and ticket tracking system. Versions prior to 5.0.10 and 6.0.0 through 6.0.2 contain a spreadsheet (CSV/formula) injection vulnerability. User-controlled data in spreadsheet exports is not sanitized before being written to the output file, which can cause spreadsheet applications to interpret crafted values as formulas or macros when the file is opened. This issue has been fixed in versions 5.0.10 and 6.0.3. If developers are unable to upgrade immediately, they can temporarily work around this issue by avoiding opening exported RT spreadsheet files directly in spreadsheet applications when the data may contain untrusted user input.

CVE-2026-39424 (GCVE-0-2026-39424)

Vulnerability from cvelistv5 – Published: 2026-04-14 00:56 – Updated: 2026-04-16 13:26

Title
MaxKB has CSV Injection in its Application Chat Export Functionality
Summary
MaxKB is an open-source AI assistant for enterprise. In versions 2.7.1 and below, the chat export feature is vulnerable to Improper Neutralization of Formula Elements in a CSV File. When an administrator exports the application chat history to an Excel file (.xlsx) via the /admin/api/workspace/{workspace_id}/application/{application_id}/chat/export endpoint, strings starting with formula characters are written directly without proper sanitization. Opening this file in spreadsheet applications like Microsoft Excel can lead to Arbitrary Code Execution (RCE) on the administrator's workstation via Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE). The issue is a variant of CVE-2025-4546, which fixed the exact same pattern in apps/dataset/serializers/document_serializers.py but missed the application chat export sink. This issue has been fixed in version 2.8.0.

CVE-2026-27644 (GCVE-0-2026-27644)

Vulnerability from cvelistv5 – Published: 2026-05-05 12:12 – Updated: 2026-05-05 13:11
VLAI
Title
traccar allows CSV formula injection via exported position data
Summary
Traccar is an open source GPS tracking system. In versions between 6.11.1 and 6.13.0, the CSV export functionality writes position data, including user-controlled device and computed attributes, to CSV output without proper escaping. An attacker can inject spreadsheet formulas through exported fields. When a manager or administrator opens the exported CSV file in spreadsheet software, this can cause formula execution and lead to command execution or data exfiltration. This has been patched in version 6.13.0.

Mitigation
Implementation

When generating CSV output, ensure that formula-sensitive metacharacters are effectively escaped or removed from all data before storage in the resultant CSV. Risky characters include '=' (equal), '+' (plus), '-' (minus), and '@' (at).

Mitigation
Implementation

If a field starts with a formula character, prepend it with a ' (single apostrophe), which prevents Excel from executing the formula.

Mitigation
Architecture and Design

Certain implementations of spreadsheet software might disallow formulas from executing if the file is untrusted, or if the file is not authored by the current user.
