var-201107-0133
Vulnerability from variot

fw_dbus.py in system-config-firewall 1.2.29 and earlier uses the pickle Python module unsafely during D-Bus communication between the GUI and the backend, which might allow local users to gain privileges via a crafted serialized object. Red Hat system-config-firewall is prone to a local privilege-escalation vulnerability. Local attackers can exploit this issue to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the user running the affected application. Successful exploits may aid in the compromise of affected computers. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

===================================================================== Red Hat Security Advisory

Synopsis: Moderate: system-config-firewall security update Advisory ID: RHSA-2011:0953-01 Product: Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advisory URL: https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2011-0953.html Issue date: 2011-07-18 CVE Names: CVE-2011-2520 =====================================================================

  1. Summary:

Updated system-config-firewall packages that fix one security issue are now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.

The Red Hat Security Response Team has rated this update as having moderate security impact. A Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) base score, which gives a detailed severity rating, is available from the CVE link in the References section.

  1. Relevant releases/architectures:

Red Hat Enterprise Linux Desktop (v. 6) - i386, noarch, x86_64 Red Hat Enterprise Linux HPC Node (v. 6) - noarch Red Hat Enterprise Linux HPC Node Optional (v. 6) - noarch Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server (v. 6) - i386, noarch, ppc64, s390x, x86_64 Red Hat Enterprise Linux Workstation (v. 6) - i386, noarch, x86_64

  1. Description:

system-config-firewall is a graphical user interface for basic firewall setup.

It was found that system-config-firewall used the Python pickle module in an insecure way when sending data (via D-Bus) to the privileged back-end mechanism. (CVE-2011-2520)

Red Hat would like to thank Marco Slaviero of SensePost for reporting this issue.

This erratum updates system-config-firewall to use JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) for data exchange, instead of pickle. Therefore, an updated version of system-config-printer that uses this new communication data format is also provided in this erratum.

Users of system-config-firewall are advised to upgrade to these updated packages, which contain a backported patch to resolve this issue. Running instances of system-config-firewall must be restarted before the utility will be able to communicate with its updated back-end.

  1. Solution:

Before applying this update, make sure all previously-released errata relevant to your system have been applied. Details on how to use the Red Hat Network to apply this update are available at https://access.redhat.com/kb/docs/DOC-11259

  1. Bugs fixed (http://bugzilla.redhat.com/):

717985 - CVE-2011-2520 system-config-firewall: privilege escalation flaw via use of python pickle

"data": "fw_dbus.py in system-config-firewall 1.2.29 and earlier uses the pickle Python module unsafely during D-Bus communication between the GUI and the backend, which might allow local users to gain privileges via a crafted serialized object. Red Hat system-config-firewall is prone to a local privilege-escalation vulnerability. \nLocal attackers can exploit this issue to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the user running the affected application. Successful exploits may aid in the compromise of affected computers. ----------------------------------------------------------------------\n\nThe Secunia Vulnerability Intelligence Manager (VIM) enables you to handle vulnerability threats in a simple, cost effective way. \n\nRead more and request a free trial:\nhttp://secunia.com/products/corporate/vim/\n\n----------------------------------------------------------------------\n\nTITLE:\nRed Hat update for system-config-firewall\n\nSECUNIA ADVISORY ID:\nSA45294\n\nVERIFY ADVISORY:\nSecunia.com\nhttp://secunia.com/advisories/45294/\nCustomer Area (Credentials Required)\nhttps://ca.secunia.com/?page=viewadvisory\u0026vuln_id=45294\n\nRELEASE DATE:\n2011-07-24\n\nDISCUSS ADVISORY:\nhttp://secunia.com/advisories/45294/#comments\n\nAVAILABLE ON SITE AND IN CUSTOMER AREA:\n * Last Update\n * Popularity\n * Comments\n * Criticality Level\n * Impact\n * Where\n * Solution Status\n * Operating System / Software\n * CVE Reference(s)\n\nhttp://secunia.com/advisories/45294/\n\nONLY AVAILABLE IN CUSTOMER AREA:\n * Authentication Level\n * Report Reliability\n * Secunia PoC\n * Secunia Analysis\n * Systems Affected\n * Approve Distribution\n * Remediation Status\n * Secunia CVSS Score\n * CVSS\n\nhttps://ca.secunia.com/?page=viewadvisory\u0026vuln_id=45294\n\nONLY AVAILABLE WITH SECUNIA CSI AND SECUNIA PSI:\n * AUTOMATED SCANNING\n\nhttp://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/\nhttp://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/corporate/wsus_sccm_3rd_third_party_patching/\n\nDESCRIPTION:\nRed Hat has issued an update for system-config-firewall. \n\nFurther details available in Customer Area:\nhttp://secunia.com/vulnerability_intelligence/\n\nPROVIDED AND/OR DISCOVERED BY:\nMarco Slaviero, SensePost\n\nORIGINAL ADVISORY:\nRHSA-2011:0953-1:\nhttps://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2011-0953.html\n\nOTHER REFERENCES:\nFurther details available in Customer Area:\nhttp://secunia.com/vulnerability_intelligence/\n\nDEEP LINKS:\nFurther details available in Customer Area:\nhttp://secunia.com/vulnerability_intelligence/\n\nEXTENDED DESCRIPTION:\nFurther details available in Customer Area:\nhttp://secunia.com/vulnerability_intelligence/\n\nEXTENDED SOLUTION:\nFurther details available in Customer Area:\nhttp://secunia.com/vulnerability_intelligence/\n\nEXPLOIT:\nFurther details available in Customer Area:\nhttp://secunia.com/vulnerability_intelligence/\n\n----------------------------------------------------------------------\n\nAbout:\nThis Advisory was delivered by Secunia as a free service to help\nprivate users keeping their systems up to date against the latest\nvulnerabilities. \n\nSubscribe:\nhttp://secunia.com/advisories/secunia_security_advisories/\n\nDefinitions: (Criticality, Where etc.)\nhttp://secunia.com/advisories/about_secunia_advisories/\n\n\nPlease Note:\nSecunia recommends that you verify all advisories you receive by\nclicking the link. \nSecunia NEVER sends attached files with advisories. \nSecunia does not advise people to install third party patches, only\nuse those supplied by the vendor. \n\n----------------------------------------------------------------------\n\nUnsubscribe: Secunia Security Advisories\nhttp://secunia.com/sec_adv_unsubscribe/?email=packet%40packetstormsecurity.org\n\n----------------------------------------------------------------------\n\n\n. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----\nHash: SHA1\n\n=====================================================================\n Red Hat Security Advisory\n\nSynopsis: Moderate: system-config-firewall security update\nAdvisory ID: RHSA-2011:0953-01\nProduct: Red Hat Enterprise Linux\nAdvisory URL: https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2011-0953.html\nIssue date: 2011-07-18\nCVE Names: CVE-2011-2520 \n=====================================================================\n\n1. Summary:\n\nUpdated system-config-firewall packages that fix one security issue are now\navailable for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6. \n\nThe Red Hat Security Response Team has rated this update as having moderate\nsecurity impact. A Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) base score,\nwhich gives a detailed severity rating, is available from the CVE link in\nthe References section. \n\n2. Relevant releases/architectures:\n\nRed Hat Enterprise Linux Desktop (v. 6) - i386, noarch, x86_64\nRed Hat Enterprise Linux HPC Node (v. 6) - noarch\nRed Hat Enterprise Linux HPC Node Optional (v. 6) - noarch\nRed Hat Enterprise Linux Server (v. 6) - i386, noarch, ppc64, s390x, x86_64\nRed Hat Enterprise Linux Workstation (v. 6) - i386, noarch, x86_64\n\n3. Description:\n\nsystem-config-firewall is a graphical user interface for basic firewall\nsetup. \n\nIt was found that system-config-firewall used the Python pickle module in\nan insecure way when sending data (via D-Bus) to the privileged back-end\nmechanism. \n(CVE-2011-2520)\n\nRed Hat would like to thank Marco Slaviero of SensePost for reporting this\nissue. \n\nThis erratum updates system-config-firewall to use JSON (JavaScript Object\nNotation) for data exchange, instead of pickle. Therefore, an updated\nversion of system-config-printer that uses this new communication data\nformat is also provided in this erratum. \n\nUsers of system-config-firewall are advised to upgrade to these updated\npackages, which contain a backported patch to resolve this issue. Running\ninstances of system-config-firewall must be restarted before the utility\nwill be able to communicate with its updated back-end. \n\n4. Solution:\n\nBefore applying this update, make sure all previously-released errata\nrelevant to your system have been applied. Details on how to\nuse the Red Hat Network to apply this update are available at\nhttps://access.redhat.com/kb/docs/DOC-11259\n\n5. Bugs fixed (http://bugzilla.redhat.com/):\n\n717985 - CVE-2011-2520 system-config-firewall: privilege escalation flaw via use of python pickle\n\n6.
