Title
mm/debug_vm_pgtable: clear page table entries at destroy_args()
Summary
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mm/debug_vm_pgtable: clear page table entries at destroy_args() The mm/debug_vm_pagetable test allocates manually page table entries for the tests it runs, using also its manually allocated mm_struct. That in itself is ok, but when it exits, at destroy_args() it fails to clear those entries with the *_clear functions. The problem is that leaves stale entries. If another process allocates an mm_struct with a pgd at the same address, it may end up running into the stale entry. This is happening in practice on a debug kernel with CONFIG_DEBUG_VM_PGTABLE=y, for example this is the output with some extra debugging I added (it prints a warning trace if pgtables_bytes goes negative, in addition to the warning at check_mm() function): [ 2.539353] debug_vm_pgtable: [get_random_vaddr ]: random_vaddr is 0x7ea247140000 [ 2.539366] kmem_cache info [ 2.539374] kmem_cachep 0x000000002ce82385 - freelist 0x0000000000000000 - offset 0x508 [ 2.539447] debug_vm_pgtable: [init_args ]: args->mm is 0x000000002267cc9e (...) "value": "AV:L - The vulnerable code is a boot-time `late_initcall` in mm/debug_vm_pgtable.c with no network, packet, or remote-peer input path; the resulting page-table corruption manifests in the address space of local processes via ordinary fork/exit. Exploitation therefore requires local code execution on the machine.\nAC:H - Triggering requires CONFIG_DEBUG_VM_PGTABLE=y, a debug-only option not enabled in production distribution kernels, and depends on the slab allocator handing the stale pgd page to a later mm_struct \u2014 allocator/memory-layout behaviour the attacker cannot influence (the author measured only one or two occurrences per 100 reboots). Both conditions are strictly outside attacker control.\nPR:L - No capabilities, namespaces, or root are needed \u2014 an ordinary unprivileged process is the one that receives the poisoned pgd and hits the stale entries on fault or at exit. Only the ability to run code and create processes locally is required.\nUI:N - The corruption is reached through normal process lifecycle (mm allocation, page fault, exit_mmap) with no action by any victim user. No file must be opened, mounted, or clicked.\nS:U - The stale page-table entries, double free, and accounting corruption are all confined to kernel memory managed by the same kernel security authority. No VM, IOMMU, or sandbox boundary is crossed.\nC:H - The inherited present entries reference page-table pages that were freed and can be reallocated for unrelated kernel data, so a fault at that vaddr walks arbitrary reused kernel memory as page tables and can map arbitrary physical frames readable from user space. Combined with the page-table double free, this is leverageable for kernel memory disclosure.\nI:H - The same stale entries give a write path into physical frames that the process was never granted, and `free_pgtables()` double-frees page-table pages that may already be in use elsewhere, corrupting live kernel structures. That is a memory-corruption primitive suitable for control-flow hijacking.\nA:H - The bug was reproduced as a WARNING in free_pud_range(), `BUG: Bad rss-counter state`, negative pgtables_bytes, and a double free of page-table pages, which readily escalates to an oops or panic. Any kernel crash is High."
