Common Weakness Enumeration

CWE-416

Allowed

Use After Free

Abstraction: Variant · Status: Stable

The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

9811 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

SUNRPC: Fix UAF in svc_tcp_listen_data_ready()

After the listener svc_sock is freed, and before invoking svc_tcp_accept() for the established child sock, there is a window that the newsock retaining a freed listener svc_sock in sk_user_data which cloning from parent. In the race window, if data is received on the newsock, we will observe use-after-free report in svc_tcp_listen_data_ready().

Reproduce by two tasks:

  1. while :; do rpc.nfsd 0 ; rpc.nfsd; done
  2. while :; do echo "" | ncat -4 127.0.0.1 2049 ; done

Fix the UAF by simply doing nothing in svc_tcp_listen_data_ready() if state != TCP_LISTEN, that will avoid dereferencing svsk for all child socket.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-03-27 18:31 – Updated: 2025-03-27 18:31
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

net: nfc: Fix use-after-free in local_cleanup()

Fix a use-after-free that occurs in kfree_skb() called from local_cleanup(). This could happen when killing nfc daemon (e.g. neard) after detaching an nfc device. When detaching an nfc device, local_cleanup() called from nfc_llcp_unregister_device() frees local->rx_pending and decreases local->ref by kref_put() in nfc_llcp_local_put(). In the terminating process, nfc daemon releases all sockets and it leads to decreasing local->ref. After the last release of local->ref, local_cleanup() called from local_release() frees local->rx_pending again, which leads to the bug.

Setting local->rx_pending to NULL in local_cleanup() could prevent use-after-free when local_cleanup() is called twice.

Found by a modified version of syzkaller.

Mitigation
Architecture and Design

Strategy: Language Selection

Choose a language that provides automatic memory management.

Mitigation
Implementation

Strategy: Attack Surface Reduction

When freeing pointers, be sure to set them to NULL once they are freed. However, the utilization of multiple or complex data structures may lower the usefulness of this strategy.

No CAPEC attack patterns related to this CWE.
