Common Weakness Enumeration

CWE-416

Allowed

Use After Free

Abstraction: Variant · Status: Stable

The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

9811 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

This happens because, although prepare_fb and cleanup_fb are perfectly balanced, we cannot guarantee consistency in the check plane->state->fb == state->fb. This means that sometimes we can increase the refcount in prepare_fb and don't decrease it in cleanup_fb. The opposite can also be true.

In fact, the struct drm_plane .state shouldn't be accessed directly but instead, the drm_atomic_get_new_plane_state() helper function should be used. So, we could stick to this check, but using drm_atomic_get_new_plane_state(). But actually, this check is not re ---truncated---

This is because TFM is being used in parallel.

Fix this by allocating a new AEAD TFM for async decryption, but keep the existing one for synchronous READ cases (similar to what is done in smb3_calc_signature()).

Also remove the calls to aead_request_set_callback() and crypto_wait_req() since it's always going to be a synchronous operation.

Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

i2c: Fix a potential use after free

Free the adap structure only after we are done using it. This patch just moves the put_device() down a bit to avoid the use after free.

[wsa: added comment to the code, added Fixes tag]

Mitigation
Architecture and Design

Strategy: Language Selection

Choose a language that provides automatic memory management.

Mitigation
Implementation

Strategy: Attack Surface Reduction

When freeing pointers, be sure to set them to NULL once they are freed. However, the utilization of multiple or complex data structures may lower the usefulness of this strategy.

No CAPEC attack patterns related to this CWE.
