Common Weakness Enumeration

CWE-416

Allowed

Use After Free

Abstraction: Variant · Status: Stable

The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

9843 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

net/sched: sch_taprio: fix possible use-after-free

syzbot reported a nasty crash [1] in net_tx_action() which made little sense until we got a repro.

This repro installs a taprio qdisc, but providing an invalid TCA_RATE attribute.

qdisc_create() has to destroy the just initialized taprio qdisc, and taprio_destroy() is called.

However, the hrtimer used by taprio had already fired, therefore advance_sched() called __netif_schedule().

Then net_tx_action was trying to use a destroyed qdisc.

We can not undo the __netif_schedule(), so we must wait until one cpu serviced the qdisc before we can proceed.

Many thanks to Alexander Potapenko for his help.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-06-18 12:30 – Updated: 2025-11-19 15:31
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

netfilter: nf_tables: do not allow SET_ID to refer to another table

When doing lookups for sets on the same batch by using its ID, a set from a different table can be used.

Then, when the table is removed, a reference to the set may be kept after the set is freed, leading to a potential use-after-free.

When looking for sets by ID, use the table that was used for the lookup by name, and only return sets belonging to that same table.

This fixes CVE-2022-2586, also reported as ZDI-CAN-17470.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-06-25 09:31 – Updated: 2026-06-28 09:31

Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

netfilter: nft_tunnel: fix use-after-free on object destroy

nft_tunnel_obj_destroy() calls metadata_dst_free() which directly kfree()s the metadata_dst, ignoring the dst_entry refcount. Packets that took a reference via dst_hold() in nft_tunnel_obj_eval() and are still queued (e.g. in a netem qdisc) are left with a dangling pointer. When these packets are eventually dequeued, dst_release() operates on freed memory.

Replace metadata_dst_free() with dst_release() so the metadata_dst is freed only after all references are dropped. The dst subsystem already handles metadata_dst cleanup in dst_destroy() when DST_METADATA is set.

Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

drm/xe: fix UAF around queue destruction

We currently do stuff like queuing the final destruction step on a random system wq, which will outlive the driver instance. With bad timing we can teardown the driver with one or more work workqueue still being alive leading to various UAF splats. Add a fini step to ensure user queues are properly torn down. At this point GuC should already be nuked so queue itself should no longer be referenced from hw pov.

v2 (Matt B) - Looks much safer to use a waitqueue and then just wait for the xa_array to become empty before triggering the drain.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2023-09-20 09:30 – Updated: 2024-04-04 07:45
VLAI
Details

Use after free vulnerability exists in Kostac PLC Programming Software Version 1.6.11.0. Arbitrary code may be executed by having a user open a specially crafted project file which was saved using Kostac PLC Programming Software Version 1.6.9.0 and earlier because the issue exists in parsing of KPP project files. The vendor states that Kostac PLC Programming Software Version 1.6.10.0 or later implements the function which prevents a project file alteration. Therefore, to mitigate the impact of these vulnerabilities, a project file which was saved using Kostac PLC Programming Software Version 1.6.9.0 and earlier needs to be saved again using Kostac PLC Programming Software Version 1.6.10.0 or later.

Mitigation
Architecture and Design

Strategy: Language Selection

Choose a language that provides automatic memory management.

Mitigation
Implementation

Strategy: Attack Surface Reduction

When freeing pointers, be sure to set them to NULL once they are freed. However, the utilization of multiple or complex data structures may lower the usefulness of this strategy.
