Common Weakness Enumeration

CWE-416

Allowed

Use After Free

Abstraction: Variant · Status: Stable

The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

9823 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

media: davinci: vpif: fix use-after-free on driver unbind

The driver allocates and registers two platform device structures during probe, but the devices were never deregistered on driver unbind.

This results in a use-after-free on driver unbind as the device structures were allocated using devres and would be freed by driver core when remove() returns.

Fix this by adding the missing deregistration calls to the remove() callback and failing probe on registration errors.

Note that the platform device structures must be freed using a proper release callback to avoid leaking associated resources like device names.

Details

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on vulnerable installations of Foxit Reader 9.0.1.5096. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the parsing of PDF documents. By manipulating a document's elements, an attacker can cause a pointer to be reused after it has been freed. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code under the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-6232.

Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

llc: call sock_orphan() at release time

syzbot reported an interesting trace [1] caused by a stale sk->sk_wq pointer in a closed llc socket.

In commit ff7b11aa481f ("net: socket: set sock->sk to NULL after calling proto_ops::release()") Eric Biggers hinted that some protocols are missing a sock_orphan(), we need to perform a full audit.

In net-next, I plan to clear sock->sk from sock_orphan() and amend Eric patch to add a warning.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2022-05-13 01:33 – Updated: 2022-05-13 01:33
VLAI
Details

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on vulnerable installations of Foxit Reader 9.2.0.9297. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the handling of the respose property of a host object. The issue results from the lack of validating the existence of an object prior to performing operations on the object. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-6509.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-12-11 18:30 – Updated: 2025-12-11 21:31
VLAI
Details

An issue was discovered in Foxit PDF and Editor for Windows before 13.2 and 2025 before 2025.2. A crafted PDF containing JavaScript that calls closeDoc() while internal objects are still in use can cause premature release of these objects. This use-after-free vulnerability may lead to memory corruption, potentially resulting in information disclosure when the PDF is opened.

Mitigation
Architecture and Design

Strategy: Language Selection

Choose a language that provides automatic memory management.

Mitigation
Implementation

Strategy: Attack Surface Reduction

When freeing pointers, be sure to set them to NULL once they are freed. However, the utilization of multiple or complex data structures may lower the usefulness of this strategy.

No CAPEC attack patterns related to this CWE.
