Common Weakness Enumeration

CWE-416

Allowed

Use After Free

Abstraction: Variant · Status: Stable

The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

9821 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

Details

A use-after-free can occur when events are fired for a "FontFace" object after the object has been already been destroyed while working with fonts. This results in a potentially exploitable crash. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 52, Firefox ESR < 45.8, Thunderbird < 52, and Thunderbird < 45.8.

Foxit PDF Reader templates Use-After-Free Information Disclosure Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to disclose sensitive information on affected installations of Foxit PDF Reader. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file.

The specific flaw exists within the handling of templates. The issue results from the lack of validating the existence of an object prior to performing operations on the object. An attacker can leverage this in conjunction with other vulnerabilities to execute arbitrary code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-21586.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2024-03-03 00:30 – Updated: 2024-12-11 18:30
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

RDMA/srp: Do not call scsi_done() from srp_abort()

After scmd_eh_abort_handler() has called the SCSI LLD eh_abort_handler callback, it performs one of the following actions: * Call scsi_queue_insert(). * Call scsi_finish_command(). * Call scsi_eh_scmd_add(). Hence, SCSI abort handlers must not call scsi_done(). Otherwise all the above actions would trigger a use-after-free. Hence remove the scsi_done() call from srp_abort(). Keep the srp_free_req() call before returning SUCCESS because we may not see the command again if SUCCESS is returned.

GHSA-9MP7-JX47-XV3H

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-09-23 06:30 – Updated: 2026-01-20 21:31
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

can: xilinx_can: xcan_write_frame(): fix use-after-free of transmitted SKB

can_put_echo_skb() takes ownership of the SKB and it may be freed during or after the call.

However, xilinx_can xcan_write_frame() keeps using SKB after the call.

Fix that by only calling can_put_echo_skb() after the code is done touching the SKB.

The tx_lock is held for the entire xcan_write_frame() execution and also on the can_get_echo_skb() side so the order of operations does not matter.

An earlier fix commit 3d3c817c3a40 ("can: xilinx_can: Fix usage of skb memory") did not move the can_put_echo_skb() call far enough.

[mkl: add "commit" in front of sha1 in patch description] [mkl: fix indention]

Mitigation
Architecture and Design

Strategy: Language Selection

Choose a language that provides automatic memory management.

Mitigation
Implementation

Strategy: Attack Surface Reduction

When freeing pointers, be sure to set them to NULL once they are freed. However, the utilization of multiple or complex data structures may lower the usefulness of this strategy.
