Common Weakness Enumeration

CWE-416

Allowed

Use After Free

Abstraction: Variant · Status: Stable

The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

9854 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

ksmbd: fix use-after-free in __smb2_lease_break_noti()

Move tcp_transport free to ksmbd_conn_free. If ksmbd connection is referenced when ksmbd server thread terminates, It will not be freed, but conn->tcp_transport is freed. __smb2_lease_break_noti can be performed asynchronously when the connection is disconnected. __smb2_lease_break_noti calls ksmbd_conn_write, which can cause use-after-free when conn->ksmbd_transport is already freed.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-04-13 15:31 – Updated: 2026-07-08 15:31
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

net: bonding: fix use-after-free in bond_xmit_broadcast()

bond_xmit_broadcast() reuses the original skb for the last slave (determined by bond_is_last_slave()) and clones it for others. Concurrent slave enslave/release can mutate the slave list during RCU-protected iteration, changing which slave is "last" mid-loop. This causes the original skb to be double-consumed (double-freed).

Replace the racy bond_is_last_slave() check with a simple index comparison (i + 1 == slaves_count) against the pre-snapshot slave count taken via READ_ONCE() before the loop. This preserves the zero-copy optimization for the last slave while making the "last" determination stable against concurrent list mutations.

The UAF can trigger the following crash:

GHSA-47Q3-98V3-643R

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2024-03-01 00:30 – Updated: 2024-12-10 21:30
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

net/nfc: fix use-after-free llcp_sock_bind/connect

Commits 8a4cd82d ("nfc: fix refcount leak in llcp_sock_connect()") and c33b1cc62 ("nfc: fix refcount leak in llcp_sock_bind()") fixed a refcount leak bug in bind/connect but introduced a use-after-free if the same local is assigned to 2 different sockets.

This can be triggered by the following simple program: int sock1 = socket( AF_NFC, SOCK_STREAM, NFC_SOCKPROTO_LLCP ); int sock2 = socket( AF_NFC, SOCK_STREAM, NFC_SOCKPROTO_LLCP ); memset( &addr, 0, sizeof(struct sockaddr_nfc_llcp) ); addr.sa_family = AF_NFC; addr.nfc_protocol = NFC_PROTO_NFC_DEP; bind( sock1, (struct sockaddr) &addr, sizeof(struct sockaddr_nfc_llcp) ) bind( sock2, (struct sockaddr) &addr, sizeof(struct sockaddr_nfc_llcp) ) close(sock1); close(sock2);

Fix this by assigning NULL to llcp_sock->local after calling nfc_llcp_local_put.

This addresses CVE-2021-23134.

Strategy: Language Selection

Choose a language that provides automatic memory management.

Mitigation
Implementation

Strategy: Attack Surface Reduction

When freeing pointers, be sure to set them to NULL once they are freed. However, the utilization of multiple or complex data structures may lower the usefulness of this strategy.
