CWE-416
AllowedUse After Free
Abstraction: Variant · Status: Stable
The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.
9821 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.
GHSA-2X8G-M7HP-F3X8
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-03-27 18:31 – Updated: 2025-03-28 18:33In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
btrfs: always report error in run_one_delayed_ref()
Currently we have a btrfs_debug() for run_one_delayed_ref() failure, but if end users hit such problem, there will be no chance that btrfs_debug() is enabled. This can lead to very little useful info for debugging.
This patch will:
- Add extra info for error reporting Including:
- logical bytenr
- num_bytes
- type
- action
-
ref_mod
-
Replace the btrfs_debug() with btrfs_err()
-
Move the error reporting into run_one_delayed_ref() This is to avoid use-after-free, the @node can be freed in the caller.
This error should only be triggered at most once.
As if run_one_delayed_ref() failed, we trigger the error message, then causing the call chain to error out:
btrfs_run_delayed_refs()
- btrfs_run_delayed_refs()- btrfs_run_delayed_refs_for_head()
`- run_one_delayed_ref()
And we will abort the current transaction in btrfs_run_delayed_refs(). If we have to run delayed refs for the abort transaction, run_one_delayed_ref() will just cleanup the refs and do nothing, thus no new error messages would be output.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2024-12-27 15:31 – Updated: 2025-11-03 21:31In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
SUNRPC: make sure cache entry active before cache_show
The function c_show was called with protection from RCU. This only
ensures that cp will not be freed. Therefore, the reference count for
cp can drop to zero, which will trigger a refcount use-after-free
warning when cache_get is called. To resolve this issue, use
cache_get_rcu to ensure that cp remains active.

GHSA-2XW5-2V9X-WC8M
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-05-06 12:30 – Updated: 2026-05-08 15:31In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
netfilter: nfnetlink_queue: make hash table per queue
Sharing a global hash table among all queues is tempting, but it can cause crash:
BUG: KASAN: slab-use-after-free in nfqnl_recv_verdict+0x11ac/0x15e0 [nfnetlink_queue] [..] nfqnl_recv_verdict+0x11ac/0x15e0 [nfnetlink_queue] nfnetlink_rcv_msg+0x46a/0x930 kmem_cache_alloc_node_noprof+0x11e/0x450
struct nf_queue_entry is freed via kfree, but parallel cpu can still encounter such an nf_queue_entry when walking the list.
Alternative fix is to free the nf_queue_entry via kfree_rcu() instead, but as we have to alloc/free for each skb this will cause more mem pressure.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-06-18 12:30 – Updated: 2025-12-17 18:31In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
smb: client: Fix use-after-free in cifs_fill_dirent
There is a race condition in the readdir concurrency process, which may access the rsp buffer after it has been released, triggering the following KASAN warning.

Mitigation
Strategy: Language Selection
Choose a language that provides automatic memory management.
Mitigation
Strategy: Attack Surface Reduction
When freeing pointers, be sure to set them to NULL once they are freed. However, the utilization of multiple or complex data structures may lower the usefulness of this strategy.
