Common Weakness Enumeration

CWE-190

Allowed

Integer Overflow or Wraparound

Abstraction: Base · Status: Stable

The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This occurs when an integer value is incremented to a value that is too large to store in the associated representation. When this occurs, the value may become a very small or negative number.

3874 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2022-05-24 17:18 – Updated: 2022-09-03 00:00

Details

A memory corruption issue was found in DPDK versions 17.05 and above. This flaw is caused by an integer truncation on the index of a payload. Under certain circumstances, the index (a UInt) is copied and truncated into a uint16, which can lead to out of bound indexing and possible memory corruption.

GHSA-4H38-C385-VWJX

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2024-10-21 21:30 – Updated: 2024-10-25 21:31
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

net: napi: Prevent overflow of napi_defer_hard_irqs

In commit 6f8b12d661d0 ("net: napi: add hard irqs deferral feature") napi_defer_irqs was added to net_device and napi_defer_irqs_count was added to napi_struct, both as type int.

This value never goes below zero, so there is not reason for it to be a signed int. Change the type for both from int to u32, and add an overflow check to sysfs to limit the value to S32_MAX.

The limit of S32_MAX was chosen because the practical limit before this patch was S32_MAX (anything larger was an overflow) and thus there are no behavioral changes introduced. If the extra bit is needed in the future, the limit can be raised.

Before this patch:

$ sudo bash -c 'echo 2147483649 > /sys/class/net/eth4/napi_defer_hard_irqs' $ cat /sys/class/net/eth4/napi_defer_hard_irqs -2147483647

After this patch:

$ sudo bash -c 'echo 2147483649 > /sys/class/net/eth4/napi_defer_hard_irqs' bash: line 0: echo: write error: Numerical result out of range

Similarly, /sys/class/net/XXXXX/tx_queue_len is defined as unsigned:

include/linux/netdevice.h: unsigned int tx_queue_len;

And has an overflow check:

dev_change_tx_queue_len(..., unsigned long new_len):

if (new_len != (unsigned int)new_len) return -ERANGE;

GHSA-4H3H-63V6-88QX

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-01-21 01:02 – Updated: 2026-01-21 01:02
VLAI
Summary
ESPHome vulnerable to denial-of-service via out-of-bounds check bypass in the API component
Details

Summary

An integer overflow in the API component's protobuf decoder allows denial-of-service attacks when API encryption is not used.

Details

The bounds check ptr + field_length > end in components/api/proto.cpp can overflow when a malicious client sends a large field_length value. This affects all ESPHome device platforms (ESP32, ESP8266, RP2040, LibreTiny). The overflow bypasses the out-of-bounds check, causing the device to read invalid memory and crash.

When using the plaintext API protocol, this attack can be performed without authentication. When noise encryption is enabled, knowledge of the encryption key is required.

Affected Versions

ESPHome 2025.9.0 through 2025.12.6

Mitigation

Severity

Low - Users following Security Best Practices with API encryption enabled are not affected without knowledge of the encryption key.

Impact

Denial-of-service. An attacker with network access to port 6053 can crash and reboot the device.

Credits

Thanks to @Mat931 for responsibly reporting this vulnerability.

Details

There exists interger overflows in libvpx in versions prior to 1.14.1. Calling vpx_img_alloc() with a large value of the d_w, d_h, or align parameter may result in integer overflows in the calculations of buffer sizes and offsets and some fields of the returned vpx_image_t struct may be invalid. Calling vpx_img_wrap() with a large value of the d_w, d_h, or stride_align parameter may result in integer overflows in the calculations of buffer sizes and offsets and some fields of the returned vpx_image_t struct may be invalid. We recommend upgrading to version 1.14.1 or beyond

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2024-10-21 21:30 – Updated: 2024-10-28 18:31
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

drm/amd/display: Avoid overflow assignment in link_dp_cts

sampling_rate is an uint8_t but is assigned an unsigned int, and thus it can overflow. As a result, sampling_rate is changed to uint32_t.

Similarly, LINK_QUAL_PATTERN_SET has a size of 2 bits, and it should only be assigned to a value less or equal than 4.

This fixes 2 INTEGER_OVERFLOW issues reported by Coverity.

Details

Apache HTTP Server 2.4.53 and earlier may crash or disclose information due to a read beyond bounds in ap_strcmp_match() when provided with an extremely large input buffer. While no code distributed with the server can be coerced into such a call, third-party modules or lua scripts that use ap_strcmp_match() may hypothetically be affected.

Mitigation
Requirements

Ensure that all protocols are strictly defined, such that all out-of-bounds behavior can be identified simply, and require strict conformance to the protocol.

Mitigation MIT-3
Requirements

Strategy: Language Selection

  • Use a language that does not allow this weakness to occur or provides constructs that make this weakness easier to avoid.
  • If possible, choose a language or compiler that performs automatic bounds checking.
Mitigation MIT-4
Architecture and Design

Strategy: Libraries or Frameworks

  • Use a vetted library or framework that does not allow this weakness to occur or provides constructs that make this weakness easier to avoid [REF-1482].
  • Use libraries or frameworks that make it easier to handle numbers without unexpected consequences.
  • Examples include safe integer handling packages such as SafeInt (C++) or IntegerLib (C or C++). [REF-106]
Mitigation MIT-8
Implementation

Strategy: Input Validation

  • Perform input validation on any numeric input by ensuring that it is within the expected range. Enforce that the input meets both the minimum and maximum requirements for the expected range.
  • Use unsigned integers where possible. This makes it easier to perform validation for integer overflows. When signed integers are required, ensure that the range check includes minimum values as well as maximum values.
Mitigation MIT-36
Implementation
  • Understand the programming language's underlying representation and how it interacts with numeric calculation (CWE-681). Pay close attention to byte size discrepancies, precision, signed/unsigned distinctions, truncation, conversion and casting between types, "not-a-number" calculations, and how the language handles numbers that are too large or too small for its underlying representation. [REF-7]
  • Also be careful to account for 32-bit, 64-bit, and other potential differences that may affect the numeric representation.
Mitigation MIT-15
Architecture and Design

For any security checks that are performed on the client side, ensure that these checks are duplicated on the server side, in order to avoid CWE-602. Attackers can bypass the client-side checks by modifying values after the checks have been performed, or by changing the client to remove the client-side checks entirely. Then, these modified values would be submitted to the server.

Mitigation MIT-26
Implementation

Strategy: Compilation or Build Hardening

Examine compiler warnings closely and eliminate problems with potential security implications, such as signed / unsigned mismatch in memory operations, or use of uninitialized variables. Even if the weakness is rarely exploitable, a single failure may lead to the compromise of the entire system.

CAPEC-92: Forced Integer Overflow

This attack forces an integer variable to go out of range. The integer variable is often used as an offset such as size of memory allocation or similarly. The attacker would typically control the value of such variable and try to get it out of range. For instance the integer in question is incremented past the maximum possible value, it may wrap to become a very small, or negative number, therefore providing a very incorrect value which can lead to unexpected behavior. At worst the attacker can execute arbitrary code.
