CWE CWE-119
CAPEC
  • Buffer Overflow via Environment Variables
This attack pattern involves causing a buffer overflow through manipulation of environment variables. Once the attacker finds that they can modify an environment variable, they may try to overflow associated buffers. This attack leverages implicit trust often placed in environment variables.
  • Overflow Buffers
Buffer Overflow attacks target improper or missing bounds checking on buffer operations, typically triggered by input injected by an attacker. As a consequence, an attacker is able to write past the boundaries of allocated buffer regions in memory, causing a program crash or potentially redirection of execution as per the attackers' choice.
  • Client-side Injection-induced Buffer Overflow
This type of attack exploits a buffer overflow vulnerability in targeted client software through injection of malicious content from a custom-built hostile service.
  • Filter Failure through Buffer Overflow
In this attack, the idea is to cause an active filter to fail by causing an oversized transaction. An attacker may try to feed overly long input strings to the program in an attempt to overwhelm the filter (by causing a buffer overflow) and hoping that the filter does not fail securely (i.e. the user input is let into the system unfiltered).
  • MIME Conversion
An attacker exploits a weakness in the MIME conversion routine to cause a buffer overflow and gain control over the mail server machine. The MIME system is designed to allow various different information formats to be interpreted and sent via e-mail. Attack points exist when data are converted to MIME compatible format and back.
  • Overflow Binary Resource File
An attack of this type exploits a buffer overflow vulnerability in the handling of binary resources. Binary resources may include music files like MP3, image files like JPEG files, and any other binary file. These attacks may pass unnoticed to the client machine through normal usage of files, such as a browser loading a seemingly innocent JPEG file. This can allow the attacker access to the execution stack and execute arbitrary code in the target process. This attack pattern is a variant of standard buffer overflow attacks using an unexpected vector (binary files) to wrap its attack and open up a new attack vector. The attacker is required to either directly serve the binary content to the victim, or place it in a locale like a MP3 sharing application, for the victim to download. The attacker then is notified upon the download or otherwise locates the vulnerability opened up by the buffer overflow.
  • Buffer Overflow via Symbolic Links
This type of attack leverages the use of symbolic links to cause buffer overflows. An attacker can try to create or manipulate a symbolic link file such that its contents result in out of bounds data. When the target software processes the symbolic link file, it could potentially overflow internal buffers with insufficient bounds checking.
  • Overflow Variables and Tags
This type of attack leverages the use of tags or variables from a formatted configuration data to cause buffer overflow. The attacker crafts a malicious HTML page or configuration file that includes oversized strings, thus causing an overflow.
  • Buffer Overflow via Parameter Expansion
In this attack, the target software is given input that the attacker knows will be modified and expanded in size during processing. This attack relies on the target software failing to anticipate that the expanded data may exceed some internal limit, thereby creating a buffer overflow.
  • Buffer Overflow in an API Call
This attack targets libraries or shared code modules which are vulnerable to buffer overflow attacks. An attacker who has access to an API may try to embed malicious code in the API function call and exploit a buffer overflow vulnerability in the function's implementation. All clients that make use of the code library thus become vulnerable by association. This has a very broad effect on security across a system, usually affecting more than one software process.
  • Buffer Overflow in Local Command-Line Utilities
This attack targets command-line utilities available in a number of shells. An attacker can leverage a vulnerability found in a command-line utility to escalate privilege to root.

  • NASL family MacOS X Local Security Checks
    NASL id MACOSX_FIREFOX_52.NASL
description The version of Mozilla Firefox installed on the remote macOS or Mac OS X host is prior to 52.0. It is, therefore, affected by multiple vulnerabilities : - Mozilla developers and community members Boris Zbarsky, Christian Holler, Honza Bambas, Jon Coppeard, Randell Jesup, Andre Bargull, Kan-Ru Chen, and Nathan Froyd reported memory safety bugs present in Firefox 51 and Firefox ESR 45.7. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort that some of these could be exploited to run arbitrary code. (CVE-2017-5398) - Mozilla developers and community members Carsten Book, Calixte Denizet, Christian Holler, Andrew McCreight, David Bolter, David Keeler, Jon Coppeard, Tyson Smith, Ronald Crane, Tooru Fujisawa, Ben Kelly, Bob Owen, Jed Davis, Julian Seward, Julian Hector, Philipp, Markus Stange, and Andre Bargull reported memory safety bugs present in Firefox 51. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort that some of these could be exploited to run arbitrary code. (CVE-2017-5399) - JIT-spray targeting asm.js combined with a heap spray allows for a bypass of ASLR and DEP protections leading to potential memory corruption attacks. (CVE-2017-5400) - A crash triggerable by web content in which an ErrorResult references unassigned memory due to a logic error. The resulting crash may be exploitable. (CVE-2017-5401) - A use-after-free can occur when events are fired for a FontFace object after the object has been already been destroyed while working with fonts. This results in a potentially exploitable crash. (CVE-2017-5402) - When adding a range to an object in the DOM, it is possible to use addRange to add the range to an incorrect root object. This triggers a use-after-free, resulting in a potentially exploitable crash. (CVE-2017-5403) - A use-after-free error can occur when manipulating ranges in selections with one node inside a native anonymous tree and one node outside of it. This results in a potentially exploitable crash. (CVE-2017-5404) - Certain response codes in FTP connections can result in the use of uninitialized values for ports in FTP operations. (CVE-2017-5405) - A segmentation fault can occur in the Skia graphics library during some canvas operations due to issues with mask/clip intersection and empty masks. (CVE-2017-5406) - Using SVG filters that don't use the fixed point math implementation on a target iframe, a malicious page can extract pixel values from a targeted user. This can be used to extract history information and read text values across domains. This violates same-origin policy and leads to information disclosure. (CVE-2017-5407) - Video files loaded video captions cross-origin without checking for the presence of CORS headers permitting such cross-origin use, leading to potential information disclosure for video captions. (CVE-2017-5408) - Memory corruption resulting in a potentially exploitable crash during garbage collection of JavaScript due errors in how incremental sweeping is managed for memory cleanup. (CVE-2017-5410) - A buffer overflow read during SVG filter color value operations, resulting in data exposure. (CVE-2017-5412) - A segmentation fault can occur during some bidirectional layout operations. (CVE-2017-5413) - The file picker dialog can choose and display the wrong local default directory when instantiated. On some operating systems, this can lead to information disclosure, such as the operating system or the local account name. (CVE-2017-5414) - An attack can use a blob URL and script to spoof an arbitrary addressbar URL prefaced by blob: as the protocol, leading to user confusion and further spoofing attacks. (CVE-2017-5415) - In certain circumstances a networking event listener can be prematurely released. This appears to result in a null dereference in practice. (CVE-2017-5416) - When dragging content from the primary browser pane to the addressbar on a malicious site, it is possible to change the addressbar so that the displayed location following navigation does not match the URL of the newly loaded page. This allows for spoofing attacks. (CVE-2017-5417) - An out of bounds read error occurs when parsing some HTTP digest authorization responses, resulting in information leakage through the reading of random memory containing matches to specifically set patterns. (CVE-2017-5418) - If a malicious site repeatedly triggers a modal authentication prompt, eventually the browser UI will become non-responsive, requiring shutdown through the operating system. This is a denial of service (DOS) attack. (CVE-2017-5419) - A javascript: url loaded by a malicious page can obfuscate its location by blanking the URL displayed in the addressbar, allowing for an attacker to spoof an existing page without the malicious page's address being displayed correctly. (CVE-2017-5420) - A malicious site could spoof the contents of the print preview window if popup windows are enabled, resulting in user confusion of what site is currently loaded. (CVE-2017-5421) - If a malicious site uses the view-source: protocol in a series within a single hyperlink, it can trigger a non-exploitable browser crash when the hyperlink is selected. This was fixed by no longer making view-source: linkable. (CVE-2017-5422) - The Gecko Media Plugin sandbox allows access to local files that match specific regular expressions. On OS OX, this matching allows access to some data in subdirectories of /private/var that could expose personal or temporary data. This has been updated to not allow access to /private/var and its subdirectories. Note: this issue only affects OS X. Other operating systems are not affected. (CVE-2017-5425) - A non-existent chrome.manifest file will attempt to be loaded during startup from the primary installation directory. If a malicious user with local access puts chrome.manifest and other referenced files in this directory, they will be loaded and activated during startup. This could result in malicious software being added without consent or modification of referenced installed files. (CVE-2017-5427) Note that Tenable Network Security has extracted the preceding description block directly from the Mozilla security advisories. Tenable has attempted to automatically clean and format it as much as possible without introducing additional issues.

    NASL id MOZILLA_FIREFOX_45_8_ESR.NASL
description The version of Mozilla Firefox ESR installed on the remote Windows host is prior to 45.8. (CVE-2017-5398) - JIT-spray targeting asm.js combined with a heap spray allows for a bypass of ASLR and DEP protections leading to potential memory corruption attacks. (CVE-2017-5402) - A use-after-free error can occur when manipulating ranges in selections with one node inside a native anonymous tree and one node outside of it. This results in a potentially exploitable crash. (CVE-2017-5404) - Certain response codes in FTP connections can result in the use of uninitialized values for ports in FTP operations. (CVE-2017-5405) - Using SVG filters that don't use the fixed point math implementation on a target iframe, a malicious page can extract pixel values from a targeted user. (CVE-2017-5408) - The Mozilla Windows updater can be called by a non-privileged user to delete an arbitrary local file by passing a special path to the callback parameter through the Mozilla Maintenance Service, which has privileged access. Note: This attack requires local system access and only affects Windows. Other operating systems are not affected. (CVE-2017-5409) - Memory corruption resulting in a potentially exploitable crash during garbage collection of JavaScript due errors in how incremental sweeping is managed for memory cleanup. NSS version 3.28, 3.28.1 and 3.28.2 contained changes that were in violation with the NSS compatibility promise. ECParams, which is part of the public API of the freebl/softokn parts of NSS, had been changed to include an additional attribute. That size increase caused crashes or malfunctioning with applications that use that data structure directly, or indirectly through ECPublicKey, ECPrivateKey, NSSLOWKEYPublicKey, NSSLOWKEYPrivateKey, or potentially other data structures that reference ECParams. The change has been reverted to the original state in bug bmo#1334108. SECKEYECPublicKey had been extended with a new attribute, named 'encoding'. If an application passed type SECKEYECPublicKey to NSS (as part of SECKEYPublicKey), the NSS library read the uninitialized attribute. With this NSS release SECKEYECPublicKey.encoding is deprecated. NSS no longer reads the attribute, and will always set it to ECPoint_Undefined. See bug bmo#1340103. - requires NSPR >= 4.13.1 - update to NSS 3.28.2 This is a stability and compatibility release. Below is a summary of the changes. - Fixed a NSS 3.28 regression in the signature scheme flexibility that causes connectivity issues between iOS 8 clients and NSS servers with ECDSA certificates (bmo#1334114) - Fixed a possible crash on some Windows systems (bmo#1323150) - Fixed a compatibility issue with TLS clients that do not provide a list of supported key exchange groups (bmo#1330612)

    NASL id MACOSX_THUNDERBIRD_45_8.NASL
description The version of Mozilla Thunderbird installed on the remote macOS or Mac OS X host is prior to 45.8. It is, therefore, affected by multiple vulnerabilities : - Mozilla developers and community members Boris Zbarsky, Christian Holler, Honza Bambas, Jon Coppeard, Randell Jesup, Andre Bargull, Kan-Ru Chen, and Nathan Froyd reported memory safety bugs present in Thunderbird 45.7. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption, and we presume that with enough effort that some of these could be exploited to run arbitrary code. (CVE-2017-5398) - JIT-spray targeting asm.js combined with a heap spray allows for a bypass of ASLR and DEP protections leading to potential memory corruption attacks. (CVE-2017-5408) - Memory corruption resulting in a potentially exploitable crash during garbage collection of JavaScript due to errors in how incremental sweeping is managed for memory cleanup. (CVE-2017-5410) Note that Tenable Network Security has extracted the preceding description block directly from the Mozilla security advisories. Tenable has attempted to automatically clean and format it as much as possible without introducing additional issues.

Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort that some of these could be exploited to run arbitrary code. (CVE-2017-5398) - JIT-spray targeting asm.js combined with a heap spray allows for a bypass of ASLR and DEP protections leading to potential memory corruption attacks. (CVE-2017-5410) Note that Tenable Network Security has extracted the preceding description block directly from the Mozilla security advisories. Tenable has attempted to automatically clean and format it as much as possible without introducing additional issues.

description Multiple security issues have been found in Thunderbird, which may may lead to the execution of arbitrary code or information leaks. With this update, the Icedove packages are de-branded back to the official Mozilla branding. With the removing of the Debian branding the packages are also renamed back to the official names used by Mozilla. The Thunderbird package is using a different default profile folder, the default profile folder is now '\$(HOME)/.thunderbird'. The users profile folder, that was used in Icedove, will get migrated to the new profile folder on the first start, that can take a little bit more time. Please read README.Debian for getting more information about the changes.
