ID CVE-2009-3726
Summary The nfs4_proc_lock function in fs/nfs/nfs4proc.c in the NFSv4 client in the Linux kernel before 2.6.31-rc4 allows remote NFS servers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and panic) by sending a certain response containing incorrect file attributes, which trigger attempted use of an open file that lacks NFSv4 state.

    description Updated kernel packages that fix three security issues and several bugs are now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4. The Red Hat Security Response Team has rated this update as having important security impact. Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) base scores, which give detailed severity ratings, are available for each vulnerability from the CVE links in the References section. The kernel packages contain the Linux kernel, the core of any Linux operating system. Security fixes : * a NULL pointer dereference flaw was found in the Linux kernel NFSv4 implementation. Several of the NFSv4 file locking functions failed to check whether a file had been opened on the server before performing locking operations on it. A local, unprivileged user on a system with an NFSv4 share mounted could possibly use this flaw to cause a kernel panic (denial of service) or escalate their privileges. (CVE-2009-3726, Important) * a flaw was found in the sctp_process_unk_param() function in the Linux kernel Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) implementation. A remote attacker could send a specially crafted SCTP packet to an SCTP listening port on a target system, causing a kernel panic (denial of service). (CVE-2010-1173, Important) * a race condition between finding a keyring by name and destroying a freed keyring was found in the Linux kernel key management facility. A local, unprivileged user could use this flaw to cause a kernel panic (denial of service) or escalate their privileges. Bug fixes : * RHBA-2007:0791 introduced a regression in the Journaling Block Device (JBD). Under certain circumstances, removing a large file (such as 300 MB or more) did not result in inactive memory being freed, leading to the system having a large amount of inactive memory. Now, the memory is correctly freed. (BZ#589155) * the timer_interrupt() routine did not scale lost real ticks to logical ticks correctly, possibly causing time drift for 64-bit Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) guests that were booted with the 'divider=x' kernel parameter set to a value greater than 1. 'warning: many lost ticks' messages may have been logged on the affected guest systems. (BZ#590551) * a bug could have prevented NFSv3 clients from having the most up-to-date file attributes for files on a given NFSv3 file system. In cases where a file type changed, such as if a file was removed and replaced with a directory of the same name, the NFSv3 client may not have noticed this change until stat(2) was called (for example, by running 'ls -l'). (BZ#596372) * RHBA-2007:0791 introduced bugs in the Linux kernel PCI-X subsystem. These could have caused a system deadlock on some systems where the BIOS set the default Maximum Memory Read Byte Count (MMRBC) to 4096, and that also use the Intel PRO/1000 Linux driver, e1000. Errors such as 'e1000: eth[x]: e1000_clean_tx_irq: Detected Tx Unit Hang' were logged. (BZ#596374) * an out of memory condition in a KVM guest, using the virtio-net network driver and also under heavy network stress, could have resulted in that guest being unable to receive network traffic. Users had to manually remove and re-add the virtio_net module and restart the network service before networking worked as expected. Such memory conditions no longer prevent KVM guests receiving network traffic. (BZ#597310) * when an SFQ qdisc that limited the queue size to two packets was added to a network interface, sending traffic through that interface resulted in a kernel crash. Such a qdisc no longer results in a kernel crash. (BZ#597312) * when an NFS client opened a file with the O_TRUNC flag set, it received a valid stateid, but did not use that stateid to perform the SETATTR call. Such cases were rejected by Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 NFS servers with an 'NFS4ERR_BAD_STATEID' error, possibly preventing some NFS clients from writing files to an NFS file system. (BZ#597314) Users should upgrade to these updated packages, which contain backported patches to correct these issues. The system must be rebooted for this update to take effect.

    description NOTE: This kernel update marks the final planned kernel security update for the 2.6.18 kernel in the Debian release 'etch'. Although security support for 'etch' officially ended on Feburary 15th, 2010, this update was already in preparation before that date. A final update that includes fixes for these issues in the 2.6.24 kernel is also in preparation and will be released shortly. Several vulnerabilities have been discovered in the Linux kernel that may lead to a denial of service or privilege escalation. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project identifies the following problems : - CVE-2009-3080 Dave Jones reported an issue in the gdth SCSI driver. A missing check for negative offsets in an ioctl call could be exploited by local users to create a denial of service or potentially gain elevated privileges. - CVE-2009-3726 Trond Myklebust reported an issue where a malicious NFS server could cause a denial of service condition on its clients by returning incorrect attributes during an open call. - CVE-2009-4005 Roel Kluin discovered an issue in the hfc_usb driver, an ISDN driver for Colognechip HFC-S USB chip. A potential read overflow exists which may allow remote users to cause a denial of service condition (oops). - CVE-2009-4020 Amerigo Wang discovered an issue in the HFS filesystem that would allow a denial of service by a local user who has sufficient privileges to mount a specially crafted filesystem. - CVE-2009-4021 Anana V. Avati discovered an issue in the fuse subsystem. If the system is sufficiently low on memory, a local user can cause the kernel to dereference an invalid pointer resulting in a denial of service (oops) and potentially an escalation of privileges. - CVE-2009-4536 Fabian Yamaguchi reported an issue in the e1000 driver for Intel gigabit network adapters which allow remote users to bypass packet filters using specially crafted ethernet frames. - CVE-2010-0007 Florian Westphal reported a lack of capability checking in the ebtables netfilter subsystem. If the ebtables module is loaded, local users can add and modify ebtables rules. - CVE-2010-0410 Sebastian Krahmer discovered an issue in the netlink connector subsystem that permits local users to allocate large amounts of system memory resulting in a denial of service (out of memory). - CVE-2010-0415 Ramon de Carvalho Valle discovered an issue in the sys_move_pages interface, limited to amd64, ia64 and powerpc64 flavors in Debian. Local users can exploit this issue to cause a denial of service (system crash) or gain access to sensitive kernel memory. - CVE-2010-0622 Jerome Marchand reported an issue in the futex subsystem that allows a local user to force an invalid futex state which results in a denial of service (oops). This update also fixes a regression introduced by a previous security update that caused problems booting on certain s390 systems.

(CVE-2009-3621) J. Bruce Fields discovered that NFSv4 did not correctly use the credential cache. A local attacker using a mount with AUTH_NULL authentication could exploit this to crash the system or gain root privileges. Only Ubuntu 9.10 was affected. (CVE-2009-3623) Alexander Zangerl discovered that the kernel keyring did not correctly reference count. A local attacker could issue a series of specially crafted keyring calls to crash the system or gain root privileges. Only Ubuntu 9.10 was affected. (CVE-2009-3624) David Wagner discovered that KVM did not correctly bounds-check CPUID entries. A local attacker could exploit this to crash the system or possibly gain elevated privileges. (CVE-2009-3888) Joseph Malicki discovered that the MegaRAID SAS driver had world-writable option files. A local attacker could exploit these to disrupt the behavior of the controller, leading to a denial of service. A remote attacker could send specially crafted packets to cause a system crash, leading to a denial of service.     description a. vMA and Service Console update for newt to 0.52.2-12.el5_4.1 Newt is a programming library for color text mode, widget based user interfaces. Newt can be used to add stacked windows, entry widgets, checkboxes, radio buttons, labels, plain text fields, scrollbars, etc., to text mode user interfaces. A heap-based buffer overflow flaw was found in the way newt processes content that is to be displayed in a text dialog box. A local attacker could issue a specially crafted text dialog box display request (direct or via a custom application), leading to a denial of service (application crash) or, potentially, arbitrary code execution with the privileges of the user running the application using the newt library. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures Project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2009-2905 to this issue. b. vMA and Service Console update for vMA package nfs-utils to 1.0.9-42.el5 The nfs-utils package provides a daemon for the kernel NFS server and related tools. It was discovered that nfs-utils did not use tcp_wrappers correctly. Certain hosts access rules defined in '/etc/hosts.allow' and '/etc/hosts.deny' may not have been honored, possibly allowing remote attackers to bypass intended access restrictions. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures Project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2008-4552 to this issue. c. vMA and Service Console package glib2 updated to 2.12.3-4.el5_3.1 GLib is the low-level core library that forms the basis for projects such as GTK+ and GNOME. It provides data structure handling for C, portability wrappers, and interfaces for such runtime functionality as an event loop, threads, dynamic loading, and an object system. Multiple integer overflows in glib/gbase64.c in GLib before 2.20 allow context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long string that is converted either from or to a base64 representation. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures Project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2008-4316 to this issue. d. vMA and Service Console update for openssl to 0.9.8e-12.el5 SSL is a toolkit implementing SSL v2/v3 and TLS protocols with full- strength cryptography world-wide. Multiple denial of service flaws were discovered in OpenSSL's DTLS implementation. A remote attacker could use these flaws to cause a DTLS server to use excessive amounts of memory, or crash on an invalid memory access or NULL pointer dereference. A remote attacker could use this flaw to bypass the DNSSEC validation check and perform a cache poisoning attack if the target BIND server was receiving such client queries. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures Project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2009-4022 to this issue. f. vMA and Service Console package expat updated to 1.95.8-8.3.el5_4.2. Two buffer over-read flaws were found in the way Expat handled malformed UTF-8 sequences when processing XML files. A specially- crafted XML file could cause applications using Expat to fail while parsing the file. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures Project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the names CVE-2009-3560 and CVE-2009-3720 to these issues. g. vMA and Service Console package openssh update to 4.3p2-36.el5_4.2 A Red Hat specific patch used in the openssh packages as shipped in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.4 (RHSA-2009:1287) loosened certain ownership requirements for directories used as arguments for the ChrootDirectory configuration options. A malicious user that also has or previously had non-chroot shell access to a system could possibly use this flaw to escalate their privileges and run commands as any system user. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures Project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2009-2904 to this issue. h. vMA and Service Console package ntp updated to ntp-4.2.2p1-9.el5_4.1.i386.rpm A flaw was discovered in the way ntpd handled certain malformed NTP packets. ntpd logged information about all such packets and replied with an NTP packet that was treated as malformed when received by another ntpd. A remote attacker could use this flaw to create an NTP packet reply loop between two ntpd servers through a malformed packet with a spoofed source IP address and port, causing ntpd on those servers to use excessive amounts of CPU time and fill disk space with log messages.
