description The remote VMware ESXi 5.0 host is affected by multiple vulnerabilities : - A denial of service vulnerability exists in the big2_toUtf8() function in file lib/xmltok.c in the libexpat library. A remote attacker can exploit this, via an XML document having malformed UTF-8 sequences, to cause a buffer over-read, thus crashing the application. (CVE-2009-3560) - A denial of service vulnerability exists in the updatePosition() function in file lib/xmltok.c in the libexpat library. A remote attacker can exploit this, via an XML document having malformed UTF-8 sequences, to cause a buffer over-read, thus crashing the application. (CVE-2009-3720) - An integer overflow condition exists in the BZ2_decompress() function in file decompress.c in the bzip2 and libbzip2 library. A remote attacker can exploit this, via a crafted compressed file, to cause a denial of service or the execution of arbitrary code. (CVE-2010-0405) - A denial of service vulnerability exists in the audioop module due to multiple integer overflows conditions in file audioop.c. A remote attacker can exploit this, via a large fragment or argument, to cause a buffer overflow, resulting in an application crash. (CVE-2010-1634) - A denial of service vulnerability exists in the audioop module due to a failure to verify the relationships between size arguments and byte string length. A remote attacker can exploit this, via crafted arguments, to cause memory corruption, resulting in an application crash. (CVE-2010-2089) - A flaw exists in the urllib and urllib2 modules due to processing Location headers that specify redirection to a file. A remote attacker can exploit this, via a crafted URL, to gain sensitive information or cause a denial of service. (CVE-2011-1521) - A privilege escalation vulnerability exists due to an incorrect ACL being used for the VMware Tools folder. description An updated PyXML package that fixes one security issue is now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 and 5. This update has been rated as having moderate security impact by the Red Hat Security Response Team. PyXML provides XML libraries for Python. The distribution contains a validating XML parser, an implementation of the SAX and DOM programming interfaces, and an interface to the Expat parser. A buffer over-read flaw was found in the way PyXML's Expat parser handled malformed UTF-8 sequences when processing XML files. A specially crafted XML file could cause Python applications using PyXML's Expat parser to crash while parsing the file. (CVE-2009-3720) This update makes PyXML use the system Expat library rather than its own internal copy; therefore, users must install the RHSA-2009:1625 expat update together with this PyXML update to resolve the CVE-2009-3720 issue. All PyXML users should upgrade to this updated package, which changes PyXML to use the system Expat library. It was discovered that nfs-utils did not use tcp_wrappers correctly. Certain hosts access rules defined in '/etc/hosts.allow' and '/etc/hosts.deny' may not have been honored, possibly allowing remote attackers to bypass intended access restrictions. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures Project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2008-4552 to this issue. c. vMA and Service Console package glib2 updated to 2.12.3-4.el5_3.1 GLib is the low-level core library that forms the basis for projects such as GTK+ and GNOME. It provides data structure handling for C, portability wrappers, and interfaces for such runtime functionality as an event loop, threads, dynamic loading, and an object system. Multiple integer overflows in glib/gbase64.c in GLib before 2.20 allow context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long string that is converted either from or to a base64 representation. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures Project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2008-4316 to this issue. d. vMA and Service Console update for openssl to 0.9.8e-12.el5 SSL is a toolkit implementing SSL v2/v3 and TLS protocols with full- strength cryptography world-wide. Multiple denial of service flaws were discovered in OpenSSL's DTLS implementation. A remote attacker could use these flaws to cause a DTLS server to use excessive amounts of memory, or crash on an invalid memory access or NULL pointer dereference. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures Project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the names CVE-2009-1377, CVE-2009-1378, CVE-2009-1379, CVE-2009-1386, CVE-2009-1387 to these issues. An input validation flaw was found in the handling of the BMPString and UniversalString ASN1 string types in OpenSSL's ASN1_STRING_print_ex() function. An attacker could use this flaw to create a specially crafted X.509 certificate that could cause applications using the affected function to crash when printing certificate contents. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures Project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2009-0590 to this issue. e. vMA and Service Console package bind updated to 9.3.6-4.P1.el5_4.1 It was discovered that BIND was incorrectly caching responses without performing proper DNSSEC validation, when those responses were received during the resolution of a recursive client query that requested DNSSEC records but indicated that checking should be disabled. A remote attacker could use this flaw to bypass the DNSSEC validation check and perform a cache poisoning attack if the target BIND server was receiving such client queries. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures Project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2009-4022 to this issue. f. vMA and Service Console package expat updated to 1.95.8-8.3.el5_4.2. Two buffer over-read flaws were found in the way Expat handled malformed UTF-8 sequences when processing XML files. A specially- crafted XML file could cause applications using Expat to fail while parsing the file. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures Project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the names CVE-2009-3560 and CVE-2009-3720 to these issues. g. vMA and Service Console package openssh update to 4.3p2-36.el5_4.2 A Red Hat specific patch used in the openssh packages as shipped in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.4 (RHSA-2009:1287) loosened certain ownership requirements for directories used as arguments for the ChrootDirectory configuration options. A malicious user that also has or previously had non-chroot shell access to a system could possibly use this flaw to escalate their privileges and run commands as any system user. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures Project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2009-2904 to this issue. h. vMA and Service Console package ntp updated to ntp-4.2.2p1-9.el5_4.1.i386.rpm A flaw was discovered in the way ntpd handled certain malformed NTP packets. ntpd logged information about all such packets and replied with an NTP packet that was treated as malformed when received by another ntpd. A remote attacker could use this flaw to create an NTP packet reply loop between two ntpd servers through a malformed packet with a spoofed source IP address and port, causing ntpd on those servers to use excessive amounts of CPU time and fill disk space with log messages. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures Project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2009-3563 to this issue. i. vMA update for package kernel to 2.6.18-164.9.1.el5 Updated vMA package kernel addresses the security issues listed below. description The version of Apple iTunes installed on the remote Windows host is prior to 12.6. It is, therefore, affected by multiple vulnerabilities : - Multiple vulnerabilities exist in the expat component, the most severe of which are remote code execution vulnerabilities. An unauthenticated, remote attacker can exploit these vulnerabilities to cause a denial of service condition or the execution of arbitrary code in the context of the current user. (CVE-2009-3270, CVE-2009-3560, CVE-2009-3720, CVE-2012-1147, CVE-2012-1148, CVE-2012-6702, CVE-2015-1283, CVE-2016-0718, CVE-2016-4472, CVE-2016-5300) - Multiple vulnerabilities exist in the SQLite component, the most severe of which are remote code execution vulnerabilities. An unauthenticated, remote attacker can exploit these vulnerabilities by convincing a user to open a specially crafted file, to cause a denial of service condition or the execution of arbitrary code in the context of the current user. (CVE-2013-7443, CVE-2015-3414, CVE-2015-3415, CVE-2015-3416, CVE-2015-3717, CVE-2015-6607, CVE-2016-6153) - An information disclosure vulnerability exists in the APNs server component due to client certificates being transmitted in cleartext. A man-in-the-middle attacker can exploit this to disclose sensitive information. (CVE-2017-2383) - A use-after-free error exists in the WebKit component due to improper handling of RenderBox objects. An unauthenticated, remote attacker can exploit this to execute arbitrary code. (CVE-2017-2463) - Multiple universal cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities exist in the WebKit component due to improper validation of user-supplied input. An unauthenticated, remote attacker can exploit these vulnerabilities, by convincing a user to visit a specially crafted web page, to execute arbitrary script code in a user's browser session. (CVE-2017-2479, CVE-2017-2480, CVE-2017-2493) - An integer overflow condition exists in the libxslt component in the xsltAddTextString() function in transform.c due to improper validation of user-supplied input. An unauthenticated, remote attacker can exploit this to cause an out-of-bounds write, resulting in the execution of arbitrary code. (CVE-2017-5029) Note that Nessus has not tested for these issues but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

description Updated python packages that fix multiple security issues are now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5. The Red Hat Security Response Team has rated this update as having moderate security impact. Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) base scores, which give detailed severity ratings, are available for each vulnerability from the CVE links in the References section. Python is an interpreted, interactive, object-oriented programming language. A flaw was found in the Python urllib and urllib2 libraries where they would not differentiate between different target URLs when handling automatic redirects. This caused Python applications using these modules to follow any new URL that they understood, including the 'file://' URL type. This could allow a remote server to force a local Python application to read a local file instead of the remote one, possibly exposing local files that were not meant to be exposed. (CVE-2011-1521) A race condition was found in the way the Python smtpd module handled new connections. A remote user could use this flaw to cause a Python script using the smtpd module to terminate. (CVE-2010-3493) An information disclosure flaw was found in the way the Python CGIHTTPServer module processed certain HTTP GET requests. A remote attacker could use a specially crafted request to obtain the CGI script's source code. (CVE-2011-1015) A buffer over-read flaw was found in the way the Python Expat parser handled malformed UTF-8 sequences when processing XML files. A specially crafted XML file could cause Python applications using the Python Expat parser to crash while parsing the file. (CVE-2009-3720) This update makes Python use the system Expat library rather than its own internal copy; therefore, users must have the version of Expat shipped with RHSA-2009:1625 installed, or a later version, to resolve the CVE-2009-3720 issue. All Python users should upgrade to these updated packages, which contain backported patches to correct these issues.

description From Red Hat Security Advisory 2011:0491 : Updated python packages that fix multiple security issues are now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4. (CVE-2011-1521) Multiple flaws were found in the Python audioop module. Supplying certain inputs could cause the audioop module to crash or, possibly, execute arbitrary code. (CVE-2010-1634, CVE-2010-2089) A race condition was found in the way the Python smtpd module handled new connections.

The 4Suite package contains XML-related tools and libraries for Python, including 4DOM, 4XSLT, 4XPath, 4RDF, and 4XPointer. A buffer over-read flaw was found in the way 4Suite's XML parser handles malformed UTF-8 sequences when processing XML files. A specially crafted XML file could cause applications using the 4Suite library to crash while parsing the file. (CVE-2009-3720) Note: In Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3, this flaw only affects a non-default configuration of the 4Suite package: configurations where the beta version of the cDomlette module is enabled. All 4Suite users should upgrade to this updated package, which contains a backported patch to correct this issue. After installing the updated package, applications using the 4Suite XML-related tools and libraries must be restarted for the update to take effect.

description A flaw was found in the Python urllib and urllib2 libraries where they would not differentiate between different target URLs when handling automatic redirects. This caused Python applications using these modules to follow any new URL that they understood, including the 'file://' URL type. This could allow a remote server to force a local Python application to read a local file instead of the remote one, possibly exposing local files that were not meant to be exposed. • NASL family Red Hat Local Security Checks
    NASL id REDHAT-RHSA-2011-0492.NASL
description Updated python packages that fix multiple security issues are now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5. All Python users should upgrade to these updated packages, which contain backported patches to correct these issues.

statement Red Hat is aware of this issue and is tracking it via the following bug: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=CVE-2009-3720 The Red Hat Security Response Team has rated this issue as having moderate security impact in Python, a future update may address this flaw. If a system has PyXML installed, Python will use PyXML for expat-related functions and is then not vulnerable to the issue.
